STi convert. New IX MR owner.
I was an unfortunate victim of a car theft about a month ago (Dec 30th '05). My Rally Blue '04 STi was stolen right from my apartment garage and has still not been recovered..
The insurance paperwork has been finished and they have the rights to the title, and my worries of getting a trashed car back are now eased.. Once I knew I was done with the legal responsibilities, I was free to go shopping..
I wanted to just get another STi because its an incredible car and I knew I loved it, but was really intrigued by the EVO. I decided to check one out, and I was really impressed with it. Its not night/day differences from the STi, but subtle, slightly different ways of getting the same thing done. There's things i miss terribly about the STi, and things I really love about the EVO so far... Oh well. Life is full of turns, right? I say bring 'em..
Here's some pics of the new ride. I've been trying to take is easy, keeping the revs low (below 4/5k rpm) so I took it on a 260 mile drive this weekend through the mountains southwest of Denver.
I hope I'll make a worthy contribution to the community, the forum seems pretty well managed and polupated.
I spend most of my time on Clubwrx.net as "bigd".

The STi feels more powerful, like a brute force musclecar, but the EVO feels smoother, more finesse and control...
STi:
The STi drivetrain (esp the tranny) was amazing, it makes the car feel so stout, I could shift so hard and it would just GO. It was an awesome feeling that your car's tranny is nearly indestructible. And the grip, OH THE GRIP! it was nearly impossible to break it loose unless that was your sole goal. It was so forgiving around a track that it elevated my confidence to previously unknown levels. You could blast into a hairpin, brake controllably VERY hard (Ferodo DS2500 pads/Motul fluid, ss lines), turn in, once you hit the apex, FLOOR IT. where you pointed it, it would go. Even ith the suspension work I did, (Prodrive springs, Cobb swaybars, Hotchkis endlinks) it had just the right balance of under/oversteer. It wouldn't slide or push.
The car had a "nicer" feel to it, without the wing (I did a wingless trunk-swap) it seemed to blend in and go unnoticed. Aftermarket exhaust (I used Invidia) makes the boxer engine sound like a big V8, It rumbles and pops and just scares people. I'd get some people try to run me from a light, I'd rev quick... GGRRRURMMMBLE pop-POW GRRrrr.. and they'd get huge eyes and back off, it was hilarious. Launching the STi was nearly effortless, espectially when you know you can't break that amazing tranny.. The bright red gauge cluster with the external temp and programmable shift LED was really nice, I think I miss IT the most of all the interior differences. It's an incredible car and highly underrated by most people. I would only get questions from people who knew what it was, though. With the EVO, everyone just goes nuts, "dude how is it??, it's SICK, can I check it out???" this that blah blah, the car has SO much HYPE around it... but it's really right on par with the STi, it just gets the same job done differently, feels different, and looks WAY more aggressive..
EVO MR:
I think the things I like the most about the MR so far are all based around how it feels when it's being pushed. Aroud town there's really no difference between the two cars. The EVO garners a lot more attention. I've never been into drag racing, I want the twisties and have always been a student of driving technique. The EVO feels like its more of a "drivers' car from the factory, no significant mods required unless they suit your taste.. The suspension and steering system feel a little more pure, and that alone inspires confidence. The car doesn't "feel" like it has as much grip as the STi, but it doesn't cause a loss of confidence, if anything, increases it because you feel you have more control instead of relying on the car's wicked grip alone. The seats in the MR do a better job of holding you in place than the STi seats, which feel more comfortable for daily use.
I think a certain episode of Top Gear said it best when comparing the two cars. The STi is a musclecar brawler. The EVO is a fighter jet. The EVO is a "did you spill my pint??" kinda car, while the STi is a "YOU, OUTSIDE, NOW" kinda car..
