Im not sure if the CEL would come on, but you may have jumped the timing. I had a friend do this while practicing stick on my old 1G, and needless to say, the t-belt snapped the next day and destroyed the head.

I would play it safe and not drive the car any further until you find out what code its throwing out.

Also, I would practice driving stick on another vehicle. Namely for 2 reasons...

1) Beating up the transmission is never a good thing, especially on an Evo

2) You might blow through that clutch super-fast.... too much engine rev before the clutch is let out in 1st gear leads to a burnt clutch and a smell that doesn't leave for an hour or so.

Yes you should definitely practice on another car. I stalled my Evo the first time I got it when I was on a hill. And I'm already experienced with stick shifts. Evo is NOT a good car to learn on.

So you bought an EVO and don't know how to drive a stick up a hill. I would practice on another car. If you don't have any other options you can go rent a car and burn up their clutch. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Back then when I did valet parking I came across a few first timers who bought a stick shift porsche as their first stick car with no prior stick experience. Needless to say, they stalled the car multiple times trying to move it 10 feet. If you ever driven a porsche, you would know its definately not a car for first timers. Learning in an evo is a walk in the park compared to a porsche. My suggestion is if its not too late, learn in a mid 90s honda. Those cars are the easiest stick shift cars i've ever driven.

I learned on a 193X Dodge truck that has a three speed gearbox and the starter is a foot pedal to the right of the gas pedal. So to start the thing - turn key on, put clutch in, pull manual choke out, hit the starter pedal and the gas pedal at the same time. No wonder I crashed into my moms station wagon.....

Yeah, stop beating on the poor Evo! You don't learn to drive stick on an Evo! Or any other $30K car for that matter! If you have no other alternatives, don't buy a stick!

Good luck regardless.
