Your only 17? Not hating, but do you think an EVO is the right car for you at such a young age. How about a start with a DSM or WRX, and then eventually with more experience move up to an EVO. I know your gonna pay for it, but the EVO can be a very expensive car to own and we are not talking just payments here. But hey if you really want it, then go ahead and get it, you won't regret it's an awesome car, for sure! No problem with saving up for 3 or 4 months, I saved up for years and had to pay off my previous crap. It's all worth it. I love this car!

+1

I'd suggest starting with a nice-handling car like the new VW Rabbit and it has plenty of power to get out of its own way. It'll allow the original poster to refine his skills as a driver, so that he'll be able to handle a car like the Evo in the future. There are no shortcuts when it comes to high-performance driving, other than attending a good school(s). As the guy is looking at a land rocket like the Evo, I'm fairly sure that my advice will be ignored, but I think we have a responsibility to foster an interest in good driving. We all suffer as a result of bad/inexperienced drivers running on the same roads as the rest of us.

Edit: I completely spaced that the original poster already has a 02 Passat. That's a great machine!

Dont Try To Run, I'm willing to bet my left ball that you're nowhere close to maxing out that car. Take the time to learn how to turn it and how to apply the brakes effectively. Bob Bondurant's book will get you started and explain the concepts involved. After that, it's practice, practice, practice. A good driver can go around almost anything in a low-HP car. Being fast isn't just a matter of buying a powerful vehicle.

I could sell it, and have a down payment of about 18k... (including 3k in my checking account)... But, I don't have a consistent job. I park cars for Perfect Valet whenever I am called to do so, but it's not really consistent... which sucks, but the pay is great for my age (10/hour + tips). Would you suggest that I sell the passat, put a down payment on a new IX (in WW prolly), and pay it off as I go? It would be under my dad's name since im not 18 though...

Thanks for all the replies, they mean a lot

I'm in arlington heights. I had the viii tradedit for a truck then in 6 months I traded that for my ix rs. I had a tune and basic bolt ons on the viii the ix feels just as fast with only exhaust. The car is getting tuned next week. Pm me if you want to check it out.

Hey All,

Thanks for the kind comments, honestly im suprsised since I'm so young... but thanks.

3000ways- I agree with what you are saying completely, however my parents do not work that way. They hate it when i pay for items, and sell them, just to upgrade to a better one. They hate waste money, as we all do, haha. But, they would much much rather me just pay for the car I want to keep, rather then pay for a used DSM or WRX. Personally, id rather work my way up to it as well so that I can enjoy it more becuase i can compare it to the last cars... However I doubt that is an option with my parents.
Do you think the IX will still be available in 3-4 months though? I doubt it, haha.

aznfballer79- Thanks. Just curious, where do you work? I would like a more solid job before taking on these enourmous payments, haha.

FJF- Trust me, I've mastered the Passat. I actually got my license on my birthday and have been driving ever since... Already have drove 20,000 miles. That's not including the 75+ hours I've drove with my permit and all of that crap... And yes, no accidents, but I do drive fast, and the passat has the worst suspension known to man and it weighs the same weight (3800lbs) as my moms van... And the HP is under 200. I could mod the passat, but honestly guys, unless i Supercharge it (7500 installed), an exhaust tune and intake does about 20HP (IMO, Not worth it.). Im a member on ClubB5/passatworld and the passat just can never go anywhere, but it is a great machine.

wroblewskievo- Dropped you a PM

Thanks All

DrienToThrill- Why do you say that? I do not see any reason to to not want the 9 over the 8, unless it's finacial issues...

To answer your question (went a little off topic on you on my first post) there more differences between the EVO IX and VIII then people realize. Some of these differences are substantial, some are minor. Most of the changes are with the powertrain. The turbo for instance is different, with the IX stock turbo being a better unit than the VIII. It is still debatable on whether the IX makes a lot more power with bolt on mods and no flash, some say no. But then people with IXs post times for example of a 12.3@113MPH and have no flash, so obviously there had to be some additional power added to the car with out a flash. Is the IX more powerful stock, yes in my opinion it is, the average IX is more powerful than the average VIII, but then some people will say this is not so, but the majority of people report back with the IX being more powerful. Not all IXs will dyno 260whp+, so don't surprise if your IX is average and is in the 250whp range. But I've never seen a IX dyno lower than 240whp on a dynojet, and this is not the case for the VIII. The interior is also different, I must admit the seats in the IX compared to the VIII was a big factor in my choice to buy a IX. The seats in the VIII are just as comfortable, but the seats in the IX in my opinion just seemed a little more sportier in apperance. The dash on a VIII and IX are not the greatest, the radio is ok, but these seats are to die for. The IX takes very well to mods, almost everybody is agreement that a bolt on mods IX is as fast/powerful or slightly faster/more powerful than a VIII with bolt ons and cams. More aftermarket options are available for the VIII than the IX, but the IX is starting to get more parts. Cams should be available soon from GSC at a price of $599, I can't wait to see what results these bolt on IXs with 350whp+ do with a true set of 280 Cams. As far as exterior apperance, it's a matter of personal opinion as always, but I do see more and more VIII owners sporting IX body kits these days. Don't get me wrong though, both the VIII and IX are awesome cars, and you couldn't go wrong with either.

Here is a good list of most/all the differences. I owned both and love my IX.

IX has....
MIVEC
Better turbo
Better, more addaptive ECU
Bigger fuel pump then VIII
revised coolent passages in the head which allow more aggresive tuning

New front bumper w/o the "beck"
blackout headlights and tail lights
revised enkies on the RS & GSR - 5oz lighter then VIII enkies
Hollow carbon fiber wing (VIII is solid)

Seats are now suede and alactra (sp) - black & gray (VIIIs are black & blue)
carbon fiber look dash piece
Steering wheel painted black (VIII was silver)

A IX normal dynos 10-20 HP&TQ more then an VIII. The MIVEC and new turbo on the IX make daily driving better due to power being available at a lower RPM.
The main reason a IX is better then an VIII is its outstanding output after mods.
A IX with just a turbo back exhaust and a flash will produce power similar to a VIII with turboback exhaust, cams and flash (and the VIII usually needs a Fuel pump too).

Take Care
thats true, and plus the turbo lag problem with the evo8 is fixed on the 9...thats another thing to consider.
