Gas Brands have different quality??

Hey guys,

I keep hearing SHELL has the best quality of gasoline in north america. Anyone hear this? If there are differences in quality...which do you think is the best?

Shell
BP
Citgo
Exxon
Mobil
Chevron
Sunoco

or something else?

Gas is 99% the same. You could fill up on cheapo gas and then fill up on your techron and there will be no difference, unless of course you get a bad tank of gas. But generally all gas brands are the same and I believe they all come from 2 main factories. As for the detergents & the special cleaning techron stuff, all the companies use it, it was a requirement by the gov back in '96 I believe to put this in the gas. It's also only 1 gallon of detergent to 500 gallons of gasoline.

That's my 2 cents.

The link above disapproves your theory, Shell averaged 14 more WHP than the Chevron gas.

Anyways I just use Arco/AMPM its the second closest gas station to my house. The other one is called Paradise gas or something, not the best gas station not the shadiest but Arco is usually cheaper.

I would always go to Sunoco, but that's because they sold 94, but not anymore, so now I go wherever as long as they sell 93. Ghetty=Ghetto

Personally, I always use Mobil (prefer Sunoco, but none in my area) and in a pinch will stick with a major brand, Shell, Exxon, etc

Yeah, I mean... 14whp is a good gain but what are the other factors involved like you said? Did anything else change on the cars? Hell, he could have just swapped plugs and didn't even think twice about it or the 2nd time the car properly cooled before making the pull.. who knows... you really need a good controlled experiment to say which gas (if any) is better.

(sorry if any of that is farther down in the thread, I didn't have time to read it all)

I don't believe the link, sure it might of made 14 more whp somehow but there are too many factors. Like said before, humidity, temp, maybe a bad batch of gas. A 14whp jump is too big of a difference with just a different brand of gas. From what I read before you should avoid going to a gas station that recently had it's tanks refilled.

i didnt want to read it either....there's too many pages and i didnt really want to bother reviving a dead thread.

the gas could've also been "old" or sitting in the tank for a long time
