what to look for when buying used evo
what to look for when buying used evo
Is there anything specific I should look out for when buying a used evo? I would take it to a shop I trust and have them do a compression test and I guess look for any boost leaks or other problems, but what in the suspension or body should I be on the look out for? Check the clutch obviously, but I am new to awd and not sure if there is anything else to keep a close eye on.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Go to local Mitsubishi Dealer with the vin# and find out A)has powertrain warranty been VOIDED and B)ask for a warranty claims history report and you can find out alot just from that.Next would be do a "carfax" report to see if any insurance claims have been made to it (ie: flood damage, stolen, totaled then repaired)see it it has a "clean title" and lastly, bring it to be checked over by someone who deals with Evo's everyday as they will know right what to look for.Possibly even pay a Local Miami member to check it over completly as it will be the best $$$$ ever spent,an insurance policy if you will.Hope this helps.
Its famous for the gear synchros to be shot...do a couple of high RPM quick shifts to determine this. If the car is under warranty it will cover this, if it is modded or out of warranty you will be on your own and a grinding synchro can eventually kill the gear. Like smokedmustang said watch out for the T-case howling. If you can try to buy a stock one...that way you are not stuck with problems from poor install jobs. Check things like the tires and breaks to see if they are in good shape....these things can cost alot. Also if it around 30,000 miles it is going to be due for a major service ie....diff fluid, t-case fluid, tranny fluid... Expect to pay about $400 for this service if you can not do it yourself. Other than that make sure it is clean...a person that takes care of the appearance of there car will most likely take care of the engine also. Good luck
