Just don't Do a VTA BOV. I think you should start with a TBE and a dropin or Intake, then a Boost Controler, Manual or Elctronic. After those three mods take a Break And Flash the Car, save up and Get some new stuff, but Evo perform Differently depending on what parts you put on, like any other car. Good Luck.

Absolutely correct everyone. It really depends on what you want out of your car: performance or looks. You must not forget what your budget and time constraints are. Some mods require additional mods, or potentially more, to really get any benefits at all; this really could sink you in over your head if simply bolt on parts after parts w/o much tunning.
A vta bov doesn't provide, if any, performance gain except that it is loud which was what you originally wanted. As for direct performance bolt-on's w/o much headaches a TBE (what ever fit/finish and whether you want a cat delete or not), header/exhaust manifold, and a drop in performance air filter (K&N etc...) as a first mod.
I would wait on the flash until you've upgraded your intake filter; the evo 9's intake box does what it does really well so you don't have to worry too much about your intake just yet. But if you are going for show it would definitely help to upgrade it.
FYI: vta bov = vent to atmosphere blow off valve; the factory bov for the evo 9 recirculates and does not vent to atmosphere.

i cant give you any pointer on mods... kinda in the same boat myself. just please dont be like the two punks i met tonight. One has an sti and the other a evo. both 19 and f&f freaks... the only reason they got their cars is mommy and daddy hooked them up and they saw them in a d*** movie... I had to teach the one how to drive the d*** evo. first thing he did to it was a vta blow off too... now the car runs like s*** at idle. please use the search and learn about you car the advanced forums really helped me out alot.

If your looking for a whistle like a SSQV will give you i cant help you. not that i would recomend it. But if you want you bov a lil louder get a Intake with a high flow conical filter. or take the stock drop in out. On the track i take out the filter and mine is considerably louder. I cant say its louder outside the car but in the cabin you can definately hear it. There was a post a few weeks ago about the same thing and a few guys recomended a forge recirc valve. Cant say if it works or not though.
I'm also new here and came across this thread and the topic about BOV caught my attention. I'm thinking about changing my factory ones to an aftermarket BOV. Reason is that the factory one is made out of plastic and most of the aftermarket ones are made out of forged steel or materials harder than the plastic ones. Now wouldn't switching out to an aftermarket BOV really be a beneficial add-on/mod? I mean it will help in maintaining your car's engine and help prevents leaks right?
Aftermarket DV/BPV/BOV's usually hold more boost, but your stock one will hold fine with basic mods. Also, it's the diaphram inside the DV/BPV/BOV that is likely to go bad, not the casing. You can also upgrade to a non-diaphram based DV/BPV/BOV for dependability. When you go aftermarket, the important changes will be spring tension and the diaphram (or lack there of).
I'll second opinions of the majority of above posters ... drop in filter, TBE, then a tune. Keep your recirculating DV/BPV ... stay stealthy and keep the car happy.
