The 6-speed 1-3 gears are stronger than the 5 speed. The only reported problem with the 6-speed is cooling under extreme use such as in road racing (not to be confused with racing on the road). The 6-speed is an awesome setup and more than durable enough for probably 90% of MR owners.
I've owned two of the 5-speed cars, and I prefer the 6-speed for daily driving - which is what a lot of us are doing.
