Hi everyone.

Hello everybody. I'm 15, and getting ready to buy my first car. When I turn 16, my parents will give me my mom's '04 Chevy Tahoe, but I will sell it as soon as I can (it gets ~13.5 MPG). I have been trying to decide on what kind of car to get so that I know what to look for when the time comes. I will be buying used, and I'll have ~$25,000 to spend after the sale of the Tahoe. I AM OPPOSED TO ILLEGAL STREET RACING, so if you think that I will be just another obnoxious 16 year old driving way too fast, you are wrong. I want a good car that I can build up as an Autocross car when I decide I want to. After narrowing down my possibilities because of the things I need (AWD, good baseline for my target result), I have ended up with the Subaru WRX and the Evo as my options (I do know how to drive a clutch already, and have many times). All I want is a car that I can drive every day and not have problems, and take to the track on the weekends and race legally. So, would a used Evo 8/9 be a good car for me? Any advice is great, THANKS!

Unless you have a good steady job, maintenance is going to be a killer. I would not suggest a car like this at your age for three reasons

1. At that age you probably dont have very much driving experience and are very influential.
2. You will be more of a target for cops and will complain on this board how it wasn't fair that you got pulled over for having a loud exhaust or driving "fast but safe" on empty roads.
3. Maintenance and upkeep is going to be very tough.

And if you plan on racing weekends and want to have no problems, the evo is not for you.

I suggest you get a civic or something similar to that as a first car. A WRX or Evo is too much for a first car.

I've looked into the new Civic Si, but I've read that it's gutless. The RSX-S is nice though.

Hi and welcome to evom! Hope you are telling the truth about wanting to be a responsable driver, we need more of them.

The Evo is nowhere near the same level as the WRX. The WRX is kind of like the workingclass STI wich is more close to the evo, power and handling wise. You are on EvoM so everyone here is going to tell you to get the Evo, including me.

But before you get a car like an evo you should really consider if you can afford it. I am 20 and have a fulltime job and barely make ends meet because of the car. Buying the car is the least of your concers. Maintence is what you should worry about. Tires are incredably expencive and wear out fast. Gas! Insurance etc. Unless you have filthy rich parents that will help you out, I doubt you can run a car like this. Not to mention if you plan to track it.

If you do wants to blow the full 25 grand which I dont suggest you do, you can always get a used BMW 330XI. Its all wheel drive, torquey, and looks good. BMW shifters are also very crisp.

BMW=no. I've heard that insurance is RIDICULOUS on them, and I can't stand BMW-driving teenagers...there's about 7-8 of them at my school.

25 a bit narrow for an evo...you'll have like nothing left. lol.

wrx and evo are on two different levels.

gets crappy mpg also...when you hit the track, you can get like 6mpg

if you want a track car i'd go with a s2000

not that crazy...i used to have an old one. and you're stereotyping "teenagers driving bmws." thats just like saying all evo drivers street race.

I'm not trying to do that. All of the kids in my school with Bimmers are total idiots...each single kid has more attitude than me and my friends combined.

I think you should stay away from getting an Evo for now. I agree with everyone here that keeping the car maintained in excellent condition is a pain and its expensive. I go through tires every year and i drive the car only 6 months out of the year, due to heavy snow fall where i live; and once you get an evo, it's hard to keep it stock for too long I think you should go with a older car like a 98 civic and save your money for school. Good luck

My opinion, buy a any cheap beater. Anything you can put a wrench to is a good learning experience. And you won't have to worry about car payments or high insurance rates.
