And yeah I can agree it may prevent a little damage if you get bumped from the back, but there still would be some paint damage. I've had my bumper repainted twice because of this, not in my Evo, but still I figure there's gonna be damage either way. Their insurance is paying for it so it doesn't bother me to not use them. ymmv
I don't think you can put the crash beam back on after rear end damage. It would look kind of funny your rear end is all smashed up and the crash beam is in perfect condition. Let alone it most won't likey bold on anyway.

I highly doubt it. not to mention it only costs 35 bucks... overall i'd say its worth it and i just ordered one for my IX rear bumper as well.
I am pretty sure most insurance adjusters now how a USDM crash beam bumper looks like (hint it is a very large heavy long piece of steel that is bolted on to the rear of the car.) A JDM support beam doesn't even come close to the size and heft and just because it has a Mitsubishi part number on it he can check it to see if it is a factory part (USDM). They aren't that stupid, what do you think the insurance adjusters just fell of turnip truck and not notice these things.

Like I said if you don't want to risk it, then leave it on there. I've been in a few accidents, $6000 worth of damage in one. Been rear ended twice, and not once have I had an insurance adjuster look at my car. Take it to the shop get a quote, fax it to the insurance company and I get a check. Everyone's making too big a deal over this, my point was if you accually took the time to read my posts, was that they don't do anything as far as safety is concerned.

Now for the third time if your worried about insurance, KEEP THEM ON.

I woudn't consider 13lbs and 17lbs heavy.. It's for 5mph and less, that's it.

Does anyone know where I can purchase one of these? I do not feel comfortable modifying or removing the US Spec crash beam. I also found a rear bumper thread that I posed this question on, but didn't see it listed anywhere in the current posts so I'm throwing this out there.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.
For the millionth time there is no such thing and no matter how many times people ask there will not be one that magically appears. The US market is the only one with the requirement for a 5mph beam. Before an insurance company could deny your claim they would have to first notice it was missing (not likely given most adjusters just look to estimate repair costs) and second if they did notice it was missing they'd have to prove you removed it. For all they know it got knocked off in the crash. I think some people on here are professional worriers, they worry about everything. If it worries you that much, don't get a JDM rear bumper. There are plenty of other choices.

Thanks for all the replies, they have been quite insightful. I'm actually not worried about insurance, it didn't even cross my mind. I've just always been a stickler about getting the correct component when modifying a car, and if a non-US bumper specific crash beam existed then I would have wanted one.

Gruppe S http://www.gruppe-s.com/ has GG bumpers.

Why would the insurance specifically look for the crash beam? It wouldn't.

From personal experience, I got hit a couple of months ago stopped in traffic on the freeway. The guy behind me bumped into me around 5 mph. My bumper was scratched up and the left side of the beam support was bent inboard slightly.
Yes it is there for a purpose.
Like previous post from above says, imagine what will happen if you don't have the beam on the car and the 'bump' goes directly to your rear frame? Taillights and trunk?

$$$$$$$$$

Surprisingly yes.

3000 lbs car at 5mph into your car with no bumper. What's stopping it?

Your trunk

Sorry but I respectively disagree. I can't see a 5mph crash caving in the rear of my car and exploding my taillights.
