JDM rear bumper crash beam
Alright maybe I should have rephrased my post, I guess if your worried about the insurance issue, then keep em on. Or at least keep them and try and get em on before the insurance company gets a chance to look at the car.
And yeah I can agree it may prevent a little damage if you get bumped from the back, but there still would be some paint damage. I've had my bumper repainted twice because of this, not in my Evo, but still I figure there's gonna be damage either way. Their insurance is paying for it so it doesn't bother me to not use them. ymmv

U guys are right it's not a crash beam, it's a bumper reinforcement, it helps support the IX rear bumper... not to mention that the udsm crash beams are not built for safety purposes, they're only built for 5mph crashes to keep the damage caused down in low speed accidents (basically for insurance purposes) The reason these jdm reinforcement beams are useful pieces of equiptment are because 1) it supports the bumper, 2) if you were in an accident and are replacing the 8 bumper with the jdm 9 under insurance, the body shop often wont allow you to leave no bumper support beam behind the bumper, making it impossible to put a IX rear bumper on, so being able to give them a new beam with a Mitsu part # on it with direct fitment for the bumper helps A GREAT DEAL with the hassle. 3) once again if you were to get in another accident and the insurance company checks the beam, it helps alot that you have a factory part that fits just like factory sitting behind your IX bumper... you really think they are gonna be like "thats not the factory evo VIII USDM crash beam!" I highly doubt it. not to mention it only costs 35 bucks... overall i'd say its worth it and i just ordered one for my IX rear bumper as well.
Like I said if you don't want to risk it, then leave it on there. I've been in a few accidents, $6000 worth of damage in one. Been rear ended twice, and not once have I had an insurance adjuster look at my car. Take it to the shop get a quote, fax it to the insurance company and I get a check. Everyone's making too big a deal over this, my point was if you accually took the time to read my posts, was that they don't do anything as far as safety is concerned.
Now for the third time if your worried about insurance, KEEP THEM ON.

I am pretty sure most insurance adjusters now how a USDM crash beam bumper looks like (hint it is a very large heavy long piece of steel that is bolted on to the rear of the car.) A JDM support beam doesn't even come close to the size and heft and just because it has a Mitsubishi part number on it he can check it to see if it is a factory part (USDM). They aren't that stupid, what do you think the insurance adjusters just fell of turnip truck and not notice these things.

I am on the verge of receiving my GG JDM rear bumper and would like to purchase the JDM rear crash beam to go with it. Since I am expecting it any day now, I want to get this squared away as soon as possible.
Does anyone know where I can purchase one of these? I do not feel comfortable modifying or removing the US Spec crash beam. I also found a rear bumper thread that I posed this question on, but didn't see it listed anywhere in the current posts so I'm throwing this out there.
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for all the replies, they have been quite insightful. I'm actually not worried about insurance, it didn't even cross my mind. I've just always been a stickler about getting the correct component when modifying a car, and if a non-US bumper specific crash beam existed then I would have wanted one.
Gruppe S http://www.gruppe-s.com/ has GG bumpers.

From personal experience, I got hit a couple of months ago stopped in traffic on the freeway. The guy behind me bumped into me around 5 mph. My bumper was scratched up and the left side of the beam support was bent inboard slightly.
Yes it is there for a purpose.
Like previous post from above says, imagine what will happen if you don't have the beam on the car and the 'bump' goes directly to your rear frame? Taillights and trunk?

if im not mistaken i read in the JDM bumper thread that someone said they got a local body shop to make some adjustments/modifications on the usdm crash beam to fit with their JDM bumper.....someone chime in on this
