Finding my EVO. (or, How I learned to stop fussing and love AWD)

First off, please let me thank all of you for the kindness extended to me a new forum member. I've been lurking on and off (mostly off) for some time while enjoying other cars with most of the time spent playing with the ever so cool and quirky VW TDI (who else can make 350lb/ft at idle and get 45mpg?) but now it's time to take the plunge and get into something with a bit more potential.

To these ends I'm looking to find the right car. I've looked about and have swapped a few mails with folks with cars that I find interesting but I have to admit that maybe I need some feedback as I just don't know the finer points of all models of the EVO at this point.

My goals for the car are to be a pseudo daily driver and be used for multiple track days a year. I barn storm a lot of back roads may do some TSD rally as well as Rally Cross. In short the car will be built to do as many things well as one can with as few sins as possible.

So here is my question which could be of halp to many, which models of EVO are best for what and how how much would one expect to spend on them? I hear that MRs are nice but maybe not worth the extra. I hear that 05s and up are cool for the ACD but that can also make some mods harder as well. what are the pluses vs minuses of 03-04 vs 05. What about Evo VIII vs Evo IX? MR vs RS?

Thanks in advance for the feedback. I look forward to seeing what folks have to offer.

If the car is also going ot be your daily driver then I suggest the MR or GSR models as the RS does not have some of the standard luxuries such as power locks and windows, cd player, etc. The RS is the bare bones package, good for racing and what not. MR vs GSR is basically 6 speed vs 5 speed, some prefer one other. MR has HIDS and Aluminum roof, red trim on the seating, stuff that the 5-speed doesnt have. blah blah blah, i guess you could do a search ot help you more

Thanks for the thoughts. I should have said that I have read QUITE a bit and understand the trim levels and which is what. Things like power windows and locks and all are nice but not all that important to me but the ABS would be nice to have.

I guess what I am unsure of is what sorts of perks or problems come with each set of options.

I'm loving the Dr.Stangelove reference! As far as the cars go...I'd search and look up all the info yourself than ask more specific answers. You might think the questions that you asked are specific but after some searching you will realize that they're not. Good luck!

Wow, did not expect such a dismissive and ignorant response from some but I guess you get those in every group. I honestly did not think that my questions were all that elementary nor were they nonspecific. I simply wanted to get opinions on what option sets best lend themselves to what use and what prices may be fair.

I think one thing that I wonder about is why some feel the ACD is not worthwhile and have found conflicting information by searching. I'm also hearing that the 6 speed is not as strong but have not found reasoning as to why this may be the case. So what power levels can each hold and what are the pluses as I have not found definitive answers on this either.

I would also note that I have found a great many other answers on topics such as HIDs, aluminum roof, LSDs, turbos and a whole treasure trove of info on the topic most important to me which is suspension.

I guess I was hoping to get some feedback from those who have first hand experience and maybe learn from the lessons others have learned. I have been lucky enough to talk to a few people who have kindly extended such and I'm grateful for that.
