New EVO SE Owner - Quick Question

Hey Everyone -
Got what I think is a great deal on a new 06 Silver SE - $28,750 out the door! Not my top choice for color - but for that price... I have to fly from NY to KS and pick it up but Im pysched. My question is regarding the break-in. I know there are 1000 theories from my searches. Bottom line - is driving the first 1400 miles on the car at constant freeway speeds a bad idea? Im too chicken to have it shipped plus it will be a fun ride home...
My gixxer required some on/off loads then some down time to seat the rings, etc...
I dont think it would be that extreme on a car - but what do you think or what does Mitsu recommend?

BTW - I have never driven an EVO. My buddy had one in 2003 and he took me for a 2 mile ride and I was sold. I have had a Taurus SHO, 96 Eclipse GS-T (Crank-walk) a 93' Mustang that was a blast and for the past 3 years a boring VW Passat. (I do have a GSXR-600 to satisfy my needs for the twisties). Im not so much into straight line acceleration - I am more impressed with driving smoothly thru the twisties. I lived in NC for the past 13 months and made many 500-700 mile trips thru the incredible roads in the smokies. I would HIGHLY recommend everyone on the east coast to go there at some point in your life...

Anyway - nice forum and look forward to your thoughts...

Nice man congrats. Its not the best thing to keep the rpms at a constint place. IMO get off the highway every so often and very the rpms but keep it under 5k for the first 600 miles. Maybe longer if your highwaying it.

cool

thanks for the reply. I will try to vary the rpm's the first 600 miles. Plan on getting/doing an oil change when I get back to NY. Anything other suggestions on this matter?

I was in the same position, and had it shipped. Do it. Don't blow the car's break in.

Still Debating

I can vary the rpm's and load on the motor for the first few hundred miles and slowly get on it more and more. I just hate the thought of the car arriving with any damage whatsoever. It would be fully insured - but thats not the point. I insure cargo for a living believe it or not - I seen enough to be skeptical at best...

Do the EVO's burn any oil between changes?

As long as you have a healthy motor, not perceptibly. As was said just vary your rpms as much as you can right off the bat. I wouldn't take her over 4k rpms for the first 600-1000 miles.

Hey,
I was actually thinking the same thing and getting it shipped. But i'm afraid of what can happen to it as well. Does anyone have any Experience or feedback to this? I live in PA and don't know if I can find time to pick it up. However, I dont want my car coming back shipped with dents.

I think this is a great opportunity to break in the car. It will take much longer to break it in while at home in NY. While on the highway don't use the cruise control and vary your rpm/speed. after 1k miles you can start doing short burst of acceleration in 3rd and 4th gears from 3k to about 6.5k rpm. when you get home get an oil change and enjoy the car.
