Just bought an 03 and already hear a funny noise. But no clue if it is normal or not. Basically when i hit around 80mph my car makes like a huuummmm hummmmm sound over and over. at first i thought maybe it was the tires but now im thinkin maybe something diff is going on. My buddy thinks it might be the driveshaft humming but im doubting him. Anyone elses evo ever experience this?

again with my story of every t-case sounds different... Wanna know what you should do to be sure instead of asking a bunch of bumbling idiots? Take it somewhere and have the fluid changed, check the fluid and the plug for metal shavings, if there's a lot of metal crap, its probably your tc, if not...

It could be: tires, body panels, cracks in the window seals, driveshaft, transmission (is it only in a certain gear?), some part of the engine, alternator, sigh...the list goes on and on my friend.

At 130? My tranny whines in first but I doubt its the same whine your's makes at 130.

Clutchdc5, does your's only whine in 5th/6th? Meaning if you shift up before you're going 130 is it still whining? And at 130 realize that there's about a million things that could be making noise on your car that aren't a big deal at all (remember: that's at least 130 mph wind hitting a box)

Good lord where are you people doing 130mph?

T-Case whine sounds TERRIBLE its annoyingly pitched going from anything from sounding like a jet engine to a constant high pitched alarm buzzer and even dreadful rock grinding fun noises. Now both this tcase whine and the whine you hear in 1st and 2nd gear are actually related.

The in depth answer:

This noise you hear in 1st and 2nd gear is something we call "tranmission error". Its best to think of this as minute differences in a gears teeth compared to a perfect gear. We are talking about differences in the micro inch category here so very very small.

These differences in the tooth profiles cause vibrations becuase the gears teeth are meshing differently at different loads. These vibrations are transfered into the casing and transmitted to your ears in the form of sound. Manufacturers usually spend some money to make sure the errors are minimized but they can not be totally removed. Thus you usually will get this whining sound at light loads and low speeds and often again at very high speeds. This DOES NOT mean your T-Case is broken. If you want to see a gear almost no manufacturer spends money on making quiet get some speed into reverse, noisy as hell.

When you destroy your T-Case by cracking, chipping, stripping gears you are actually creating transmission error. These are very large differences in the teeth profiles so they make A LOT OF NOISE usually at moderate speeds where they were designed to be quiet. Checking the fluids for filings and other metallic indications is a good way to test for serious irreparable damage to your T-Case.

I hope that provides you all some insight into tranny's and t-cases

I do 130 at the local race track.

And now this is a good post on TCs, Roadspike, and finally someone agreeing with me on just checking the fluids. (Which, sadly, is what I'm having done tomorrow... Hopefullly it isn't damaged since it is a rebuilt one [from what vendor I won't say, because I doubt it is their fault])
