Short shifter problem...HELP!!
I got my 2003 Vlll with a short shifter already installed, im not sure of the brand. When i am going from nuetral to first or second gear....i.e. pushing the shifter to the left it is VERY stiff and the same goes for fifth and reverse. The actual shifts between gears is normal. 1-2 is fine, however during 2-3 shifts the shifter does not snap back to the middle, i have to actually think about moving the shifter back towards neutral in order to get it into third if i do not it goes ack into first, the same goes for fifth. I am having a hard time explaining it, sorry. I have the console out right now so any help in a short amount of thime would be great. Thanks for the help
I have the console out right now, everything seams to be working properly. i will add more grease to the bushings. Is there any way it could be one of the cables going to the transmission not moving correctly?
do u have underhood bushings? check those if stock or replace them with Kartboys or whatever. I have the WORKS shortshifter and kartboy underhood bushings and it's great, just gotta make sure the bushings have enough grease or they tend to bind.
ok man, i had the EXACT same problem.
freaked me out cause i thought something was wrong with the tranny.
the reason this happened is because u have METAL underhood bushings.
have you cleaned the engine bay recently? if so, engine degreaser probably ate away the lube that greases the bushings. (that's what happened to mine).
metal bushings give you the best shifter feel because there is ALMOST no tollerance between the metal parts.
to fix the problem:
1. take the battery out
2. take the battery undertray out
3. look right below the tray and you will see 2 circular connectors that connect 2 lines coming yout of the firewall (shifter lines). one is large, other is smaller. the one that is causing the problem is the smaller one (the one that is above). u'll know what i mean once u get in there.
4. spay **** load of PB blaster on both bushings. let it sit for 10 min.
5. take the retaining pin out.
6. take the retaining circular clip out (careful, it will fly out when you pry it out with the screwdriver.
7. slide the bushing out. might have to struggle with it for a while since it's stuck.
8. i sandpapered the inside of the bushing so that there is abit more tolerance and to make sure this doesnt happen again.
9. lube the crap out of the bushing with some type of antiseize, preferably hi-temp ($6 at autozone)
10. do this for both bushings.
11. put everything back together, not forgetting to put the retaining pins back
12. shift away!
