Need help: Water temp reading

Hi there,

Am having an issue which is confounding me and I hope that someone here might be able to help and throw up some possible solutions.

Lately, my dash water temp has been fluctuating to max, hang there for a couple of secs then reverting back to normalcy. The increase in the dash water temp reading usually happens during boost (even slight boost) or when my car is stationary. BUT, my defi gauge shows that water temp is normal all this while (defi sensor tapped at upper radiator hose)!

Brought the car into the workshop: -
1. Visually inspected the coolant when the "heating" occurred, coolant was NOT boiling
2. Changed sensors - problem still there
3. Changed dash - problem still there

Anyone had this issue before?

No, I haven't had this issue.

But remember that the factory tap for the sensor is located elsewhere. So maybe, your radiator fan isn't kicking properly. When the temperature exceeds a certain level, the fan kicks in and lowers the temp.

Yeah, the factory and the aftermkt sensors are at different locations. The issue is that whilst the defi readings reads ok temps, its the stock (dashboard) readings that is fluctuating. The dash reading does not remain hot for a long time - a couple of seconds later, it drops from hot to normalcy.

If the fan does not kick in, then both readings should be sky high.

Maybe an electrical short in the wire somewhere from the sensor to the dash gauge, try a multi-volt meter test to see what's going on. Try to post this in the electrical section where someone with some Electrical skills might know something else, but this is what it sounds like to me since you have changed out the snsor and guage, gotta be a short....IMHO...
