I'm new to owning an EVO (just picked up a Silver IX last week) and am curious what the deal is with it having the Mivec system for the head? I know the VIII's didn't have this **** and is it helping or hurting when it comes to modding the car? I'm sure there are a billion threads on this, but I figured I'd add fuel to the fire. If anyone by chance has some links they can post in reference I'd love to see them. I'm not quite sure what to look for, or how far back to look date wise. I just don't wanna' go buy new cams and not be able to use them....

Congrats on your new Evo and welcome. MIVEC helps. You'll get more HP with mods on a MIVEC Evo than without. Just search around the boards in different sections and you'll find all kinds of info on exactly how MIVEC helps.
Sounds like a plan... I'll be here in AK for at least the next three years. I might take a detour and try and make the hop to Japan for a few years (if my uncle sam will let me.) and see if I can get some goodies for it. Meanwhile, are there any good speed shops in AK? Or is it the never fails "order by mail and the crew gets to tinker with a car that weekend at the cleanest driveway" shop? 
Actually, come to think of it. We've built a 400+hp VIII in a driveway before. Mind you over a few weekends, but it was doable. We just had to trailer it down to get dyno'd and tuned. From our wrenching... we popped out 417 on an '05MR. And I left all that to come up here.... well, new friends, new cars, let's get hot.
