Thinking about getting a Lancer Evo after this summer is over. What do these run new OTD? I am going to test drive one this weekend and talk some junk to sales people cant wait
What does one in good shape used run? I rode in my friends the other week and I am hooked! I know the Evo and lancer are night and day cars.. I want something pratical for now, a 4 door car and some power behind it. Can you fix up the regular lancer to have a decent amount of power? Or are you better off spending the extra cash up front on a evo? I know it has more welds, more power and so many other goodies.. What are your thoughts??

Typically if you look for a deal you can get an Evo OTD a little under 30k. Used I was OTD less that 25k
.
I don' t know if i can call the evo "practical" though its more a race car than it is a daily, not that I mind using mine as a daily. Its certainly better saving up the money for the Evo in my opinion though there are many factors which would determine if its right for you. For me the Evo is more of a toy than a car and if i wasn't making the amount of money I am as a Software developer I would have to own something else thats quick like a bike.
Evo definitely:
- Faster
- Uses a lot more fuel
- More expensive in tire wear
- Slightly more expensive to insure
- Easily modified to make more power
- Looks better imo
Mitsubishi didn't seem to make any kind of "halfway" vehicle like the subaru did with their basic WRX TR. You may even consider the TR if your not planing to modify it too much, its certainly a lot cheaper and will still spank your average eco box. Figure out what your going to do with the car and go from there.

The new base lancer has much more to work with. We will have to see though how mod friendly the new 08 lancer is though. There is speculation that it might be able to borrow from the evo, but we don' t know yet.
As for the old 02-07 Base lancers there were a few guys that moded them well enough to take a stock Evo from a roll... that says a lot for this econobox. The newer model might be able to surpass that. With moding it's all about your own ambition and pocketbook.

You'll spend large sums of cash to get any power out of a regular lancer and still never get the performance of a stock evo. Then there's the fact its fairly cheap to mod Evo's and get great power from them.
Although if your waiting until the end of summer your not too likely to find a new evo. They aren't making anymore until the X comes out sometime around January, and its a whole new platform and won't have much aftermarket support for quite some time.

I got my EVO IX MR with 4,500 miles for under $30k.
Just depends on where you go and what condition the EVO is in to determine if the cost is worth it.
There's a night and day difference and look from a baseline lancer to the EVO's. Do your homework and decide what you want. In the end, I think you'll be happier with an EVO, but you have to make sure you're ready for the cost that comes along with it, this is an expensive car to purchase and maintain.
