is it fine to run 8mm spacers without running extended bolts?

No. I run 5mm spacers and was still not comfortable running the stock lugs. If you track the car at all (i.e. road-race), you will want extended bolts.

I have 9mm hub centric spacers and I replaced the studs.
Go for ARP studs...they are the bollox. AMS sell them.
