Evo, Best bang for buck???

Well, i've read alot of other threads on here, and alot of evo owners seem to think there cars are untouchable (please dont get offended, not meaning this in a bad way). So i wanted to create a topic and see how the owners REALLY feel...
Both of my roomates have evos, and i've been a DSMer for years, so im not hating.

Straight line performance?

well, sure they can get the job done, and do it for cheap, but its not the best bang for buck IMO...
sure it will beat the STI or Z or s2000 or whatever, but the 03-04 cobras and the ls1 camaros and goats are much cheaper to create an 11, 10, or even 9 second car with.
I'm only bringing these 2 up because i'm trying to stay within the same price range.
in all honesty, i think RSX's are actually up in the ranks for cheap cars to make fast...there motors are stout, there are plenty of turbo kits out, the only real enemy is FWD...

Also, whoever said that AWD>RWD for drag racing??? maybe if the RWD is on street tires...but i've never seen AWD cars cutting sub 1.3 60fts...and RWD's dont have to replace transfer cases, 2000 dollar clutches etc etc etc.

road racing?

With the RIGHT driver, an s2000 has it beat....i'm not sure about other cars like elises and what not? maybe you can chime in. But they handle amazingly, and are very easy to drive. IMO 90% of people you give an s2k and evo and make 5 laps in each car, their time will be better in the evo, because its easier to drive, but if you can get a hang of the s2k, you're golden.

style?

honestly, the evo is a pretty ugly car....I'm not saying i wouldn't buy it. I love em!!! but it really doesnt get the looks from the ladies, sure it gets looks, but from the wrong sex lol.
this is where something like the Z(which is NOT overpriced BTW, dunno why people keep saying that) or s2k or elise or some of the other sport coupes.

Overall???

i cannot make this opinion, because each person is looking for something different in their car.
I may be looking for only style, fred may be looking for the best straight line and road course combo....etc.
I would say the evo is probably the best for OVERALL PERFORMANCE. Not best for straight line, not best for road....but the best for doing BOTH...

but some people want looks and performance, so for this reason, i dont think it is the overall best....there really ISNT. What my opinion is, can be different to the next guy.

Well, i'm drunk off my *** and was just tired of reading all these threads of people hating on this car or that car or blah blah blah....so this should be the thread to end all hating on other cars threads lol.

What in the hell is the point of your thread? Are you thinking about buying an Evo or are you just ranting?

All been covered before in one form or another. But I will have a go as I think I am qualified to take a stab at this. I am a car nut and simply buy great gars, enjoy them, and flip them when I am done having my fun. I bought the Evo for it's unique abilities as a package and it's general fun factor. I don't street race it, I don't run the 1/4 mile, and I don't track it. I bought the Evo because I wanted a seriously entertaining daily driver that was easy to tune for large power. I have always liked Evos and thought of owning one since they first came out and in my opinion, the IX was the last chance before they really changed the format so I went for it. I know what a well set up car should handle as well as the next guy because among other things, I have plenty of Porsche GT3 experience and set mine the track, have an open cockpit race car that will slaughter the GT3 and the Evo, and even have an S2000 around as an AutoX car. I will add that I am not the only Porsche GT3/GT2 owner that has an Evo IX so if people that can afford $120-$190K+ cars are buying them, they are special. I don't know anyone with an unlimited car budget that ownes any other sub $50K car. The Evo can turn great lap times on the track but is as much of a handful as the GT3 but in a different way so I personally will not find out as if I am going to work that hard on the track, it is going to be with one of my cars built for it. The S2000 as you point out is easy to turn laps with and far more predictable then the Evo but not nearly as fun to drive, not to mention that it does not have the capabilities of the Evo. The Exige S is fun to drive but is impractical on the street and for me, is not fast enough on the track or above 100MPH. As to a Camero or a Corvette, when it comes to how they handle, the word "numb" comes to mind. I will probably go for a C6 Z06 in the near future so i can check it of but it is nothing more than a brute with no refinement. It can beat the GT3 on the right track but doesn't drive like one. The Camero is not a car that would even make my meter so I won't go there.

So all this rambling aside. I personally think the Evo is the closest car that I have found to the GT3/GT2 level of all around driving pleasure and fun that can be driven daily on the street.

I have rencently had 4 M's, 3 AMG's and considered another AMG and the Audi RS4 for the Evo's slot in my garage. The fact that the Evo is there says it all.

I would also suggest reading the June issue of Motortrend where they rank the Evo as the 4th best handling car (based on both measurable and subjective factors) behind the GT3, Cayman, and Exige S. I pretty much agree with their assesment of all these cars with the exception of the Cayman, not sure how that got to #2 as I would place it in #4 behind the Evo and move the others up. The other cars icnluding the S2000 and Z06 are ranked where they belong (keep in mind that sterring feel and fun factor are a consideration in the results).

BTW, As to the looks of the Evo...I think it just looks like an Evo and is no uglier then a Porsche which just looks like a Porsche.

if you want bang for the buck straight line performance the 03/04 cobra is pretty much the king.. you can buy a used one for roughly 25k. and for about 500 in mods you can be knocking on the door of 11's. it does have irs, but its not all that good on the road courses..

the evo is a well rounded car. thats why im trading my svt lightning for one.

If all your going to do is race after three honks from a roll get a terminator, Supra, or LS series motor car. If you want more bang for the buck get a hayabusa. Now the Evo can be really quick on the streets like the cars mentioned above, What kills it is the awd. but that's what also makes it great at AutoX.

Great post and a compliment to the evo community. My favorite part was that an evo looks like an evo and porsche looks like a porsche.

In my opinion the Evo is the best bang. We all know it fast stock.
But we should ask all the other cars if they can handle 15" of snow, like I did in Cleveland in late Feb.

I am a car lover and have owned LT1s and LS1s (camaros, transam). They are great cars and you can make them quick pretty cheap, if you know how to work on them. Otherwise the labor involved, even for spark plugs suck! They suck to work on especially LT1s! Bought and evo easy to work and dont have to replace something every paycheck. FUN everytime I get in the car!

If we are truly talking bang for the buck, I'm surprised nobody mentioned the SRT-4. A sub 20,000 dollar car (when it was new) with 10,000 dollars of mods would turn the little neon that couldn't into a neon that could. -And for less than $30k

Key word it USED to be the best band for buck. I like they stopped making them in 2004.
