if i'm not mistaken, its not a good idea to do the intake and not get any sort of flash/tune

kapoosh you're correct. conestyle filters mess with our cars a/f ratios so you may even lose power without a proper tune. an e-flash for i think 100 bucks will do the trick

I used to hear the same thing before I started modding my evo. Doesn't it have something to do with the way the air starts to create turbulence within the system causing the MAF to not be able to read it properly?
In any case... I installed mine back in the day without a flash. Didn't have any problems that I noticed. I didn't get on it hard though.

Other than that, if you want to install it, just take the top part of the box off of your stock filter. Take out the filter and unbolt the screws inside. Unclip your MAF sensor harness and carefully pop out the plastic retaining screw. Take out the remaining bolts and lift the rest of the box out. Put the MAF adapter plate on the filter and torque it down good, but not so tight as to bend the adapter. Check for any open areas so that air doesn't leak/escape which can attribute to lean spots and turbulent air. Your car will stutter and drive horribly. (I know because it happened to me when I first installed mine until I realized there was a small gap that just needed to slip over the adapter better.) Install the filter and adapter onto the MAF and tighten the clamps. Once again, check for any gaps. Plug the MAF harness back in and fire it up.
Check for leaks again and take it for a spin to see how it feels. You might notice a "loss in power" as some people say. I honestly think it's just a difference in torque and the way the power is distributed. But, I have seen some cars that really do seem slower after installing a cone filter. So, I think it just depends on the car sometimes. In anycase, you can get it flashed once you start doing more mods to save yourself some money and do it all at once.

Good luck.

that filter is fine, i ran it 2 months untuned and didnt have a single problem.

Its better than a drop in. imo as good as any other intake for the stock turbo.

i still in the stock intake tube with this filter and i'm very satisfied 30k later

cheers!

It's the full intake that most of you are thinking of in regards to tuning. When you get a full intake without a tune than it can actually be a detriment. The cone filter on stock intake path is fine.

I have the AMS cone filter and it is great. I will warn you though, it might cause some idle issues due to the design of the intake pipe. The intake pipe on the evo is suppose to be a S bend, but on the AMS, it is more of a straight line. I have witnessed this on my car and other peoples cars. Something with the MAF sensor that causes a vortex in the intake. Overall it is a great product.
