BOV vs WASTEGATE

Hey everybody, im new here, recently just baught a brand new 06 EVO MR and have a few questions. I was thinking of buying a blow off but people keep telling me that a wastegate is almost the same thing and to purchase a wastegate instead. And to be honest im new to turbo cars. I just came fro ma supercharged car so i know alot about superchargers, not so much turbos. Any help would be sweet. Thanks.

Your stock Evo has a wastegate and a BOV. Try trolling the Newbie forums for a month or so to learn about your car.

You were thinking of buying a "blow off"? What is that, and why would you be thinking to buy one if you don't know anything about turbo'd cars?

Who are these "people" who are telling you that a wastegate is a "blow off" and that you should purchase one? Are they SRT-4 owners by chance?

As Testudo said, your car has a wastegate - it wouldn't work without one. It also has a very nice blow off valve on it already - it wouldn't work without one.

Do not touch either of these parts on your brand new awesome Evo IX. Also, please read the rules before posting terrible noobish threads like this. You are required to search before posting, and if you still have to post a newbie question, you post it in the newbie forum. Common sense is all that we require.

I hope this is sarcasm.

One thing, you have an internal wastegate so I assume when you say you want a wastegate you are refering to a wastegate actuator. Unless the people of whom you speak are telling you a wastegate will give you a nice sound. As for a BOV, well you dont need one but if you want the sound I would recommend something recirculated like the APS or Greddy w/ recirc kit or a number of others.

But get wastegate out of your mind right now.

Two different things. Wastegate controls boost, BOV releases built up pressure between shifts. Niether need replaced. Get an intake, exhaust, tune, etc first.

Warrtalon again is incorrect. Your car WILL run without a wastegate and bov. It's just you'll have uncontrollable boost spikes and your turbo will just die from the surge.

^^How can you build boost without a wastegate to apply the necessary back pressure/resistance you need to make boost??? Tell ya what. Go out and disconnect your WGA and see if you make any boost let alone have boost spiking.

You technically dont need a BOV though. The air will have to go somewhere though and my guess is it will blow something and cause a leak.

Umm. Have you ever heard of an externally gated turbocharger? If you disconnect your WGA then your WG flap will just be open hence the no boost pressure. On turbos with no WG, there is no flap and are controlled by an external unit. So I'm telling you what. And your BOV pressure will not leak and blow something and cause a leak. It'll have a reverse flow and "shock" the compressor fins causing the compressor surge.

Well it could "surge" the compressor fins but the air will travel the path of least resistance and if that is the path you are right, but as I said it would be my guess that it will blow a coupler before traveling back through a spinning air pump.

All turbo cars have a wastegate. That would be the externally gated thing you are talking about. Our cars have internal gates, and most after market kits have external gates. They are still wastegates though and still work the same. We have a spring in an actuator whereas external gates have the spring inside the housing but both work the same, just one is internal and one external. So I am right.
