What do these terms mean? JDM, DSM, 1G, 2G etc.

I am new to Japanese cars having owned 2 E36 M3's before this. What are these terms and what do they mean, I see them used here alot and on most japanese cars...

DSM
JDM
1G (I'm assuming this means 1st generation?)
2G (2nd generation?)

Are there any other abreviations used alot wqith Japanese or Turbo cars I should know of?

Thanks guys
Chris

DSM = Diamond Star Motors = Talons, Lasers, and Eclipses
JDM = Japanese Domestic Market = cool stuff we normally never get
1g = 90-94 DSM's
2g = 95-99 DSM's

There are probably hundreds of other acronyms relating to turbo cars. I think I've seen a list somewhere before. Just doing a google search on "DSM" will get you PAGES of matches. Hope that helps some.

So what does DSM "Diamond Star Motors" mean? Is that a type of motor in those cars or what?

Diamond Star Motors was a joint venture company established by Mitsubishi and Chrysler. This joint venture company built the Eclipses, Talons, and Lasers, which were then sold by the "parent" companies under their own brand names.

The term DSM is no longer used because the cars are no longer assembled at the plant in Normal, Illinois.

Technically - a 2G isn't really a DSM ...but that's a long winded story.

Don't forget the 3000GT and the Stealth, again, both part of the joint project between Mitsu and Chrysler. The tradition still continues somewhat with the Sebring which is essentially an Eclipse.

Also, the Sister car to the Seabring is the Dodge Avenger. Interior made my mitsubishi but looks of a dodge. I had one (nice car) it has the same interior of the eclipse but a chrysler tranny, no wonder why it broke.
