Suby owner converting

Hello Im new to the evo forums and I am thinking of buying a evo in the next couple months. I drive a stage 2 2002 Subaru WRX and love it! I am a member to several different subaru forums such as NASIOC, SCOOBYMODS, WRXFANATICS, I-CLUB and a couple generic ones. I have been with NASIOC for a long time and have been a Subaru Specialist on there for about 6 months. Im reading as much as I can about evos to learn there platform. I know a great deal about subarus and I know what to do with them and not to do with them. My question is "With Evos, what mods should I stay away from that will hurt the engine and performance?" If you add a MBC or BOV do you have to tune for it? In the next month I will be driving sti's and evos to see which one I like more. My kind of driving is just dailydriving and spirited racing at the strip. I love my stage 2 suby but I think its time to step up to the big leagues and get real power. Thanks in advance for your replys and im looking forward to talking about evos

Evo's and Suby's are alike in this regard. The stock airbox flows fine and the MAF doesnt like turbulance. Since it's a MAF based car air is metered at the intake and it should not be released to atmosphere. Evo's respond better than Subaru's do to the same mods. I guess one of the biggest differences is that it's not a bad idea to run a MBC on a Evo where with a Subaru it's probably best to control boost with your tune. Also, staged upgrades are a little different in Evo land but you'll have to visit vendors that sell staged upgrades to see the differences. Check out Buschur Racing's website for more info on stages and what mods you should do first or use the search button. Most importantly a good tune will unleash the power of the Evo and it's very easy to achive 300+whp on a IX with a TBE, MBC, and a good tune.

id stay away from the HKS SSQ bov aslong as the bov is recirc. youll be fine. Normally when you get a mbc and recirc valve and like an exhaust is when i would go for a tune.

Having been involved with both cars, I disagree with the statement that Evos respond better to simple mods. With a simple TBE and tune, you can see tremendous gains on an STI with big tq numbers and a broad power band. Percentage wise also true for a WRX. The difference for one is the stock turbo. An evo 9 for example has a bigger stock turbo that you can run more boost on than an STI. It is easier to gain more power with an Evo, but thats mostly do to the fact that it is easier to mod an Evo. Cams are quite easy and give a good return on an evo. As any suby person know, cams are a big job and not many are offered for that reason. That coupled with the limited stock turbo means that you can see a 30 or sp hp advantage on a basic (but more) mods Evo. On i-club, we are testing what once can really do on a stock turbo 2006 sti. Currently with just a TBE and tune, we are at just under 330whp. With a basic turbo porting, full-race manifold, and intake, we expect to see some interesting results.

Once you change out the turbo on an STI, power comes quite easily. Both have their ups and downs, but the evo is undoubtedly a step up from your current car.

A two major advantages to the evo are its steering feel and stronger block.

For the OP... I dont think you will need a bigger FMIC on unless your doing a turbo upgrade or maybe road racing regularly. You can add o2 housing and mbc or boost controlling flash to your list though.

Hopefully not getting OT on this post but I wanted to respond.

I'll have to join that site and see what's going on over there. I have a 06 STI as well as a Evo IX so I wasnt saying that to be a Suby hater. My personal experience is that they generally produce less power with similar mods. I wish mine was making even 300whp. I'm very interested in 330whp with just a TBE... What boost / fuel / tune?

Example

One of our local Evo's that I tuned (no knock, 22psi) has GSC S1's, BR intake, o2 housing, TBE, LICP, and a MBC and it runs neck and neck with a local STI with a GT30R, injectors, ECUTEK, TBE, Perrin FMIC, all hard pipes. In the STI's defense I think it needs a better tune.

but...

None of the STI's in my area have broken into the 12's without an upgraded turbo.

My personal Evo ran a 12.5 @ 109 with just a TBE and a drop-in with boost controlling flash with a poor 1.8 second 60ft (clutch needs replacement).
