Test pipes are not legal in any state. Altering a vehicle's emission's system is illegal for street use. Ok for track use.

yeah, thats pretty much what they do, it eliminates the catalytic converter. so yeah it'll be louder and it will allow more air to flow and all of them are illegal as it doesn't eliminate any harmful emissions

TBE = turbo back exhaust

when i installed my tbe i started out with a test pipe. i ended up switching to a high flow cat because of the smell. in the summer time with the windows down you ll smell the exhuast when slowing in traffic or stopped.

Test pipes are illegal for road use because they replace the catalytic converters with just a straight tube. They are generally louder than running with a cat, but it depends on the whole exhaust system whether or not your car will be obnoxiously loud.

My car passed emissions when it had the testpipe on it (was inside the safe area in the "sniff" test) But failed because they couldn't figure out where the cat was

Anyway, mine didn't SHOOT flames after I got tuned but if you were behind me you could see light in the exhaust sometimes and very very rarely would it get near the tip of the muffler.

so it seems like with testpipe the only time you'll really have to worry is when you go in for your smog.. sound shouldn't really be an issue with a good exhaust system right?

depends on the tbe. I have the DC sports TBE and their downpipe has a test pipe already built in and it isn't that loud just cruising around town. As soon as you stomp on it...people WILL hear you coming, ie Cops. If you have a hookup at the local inspection station do it. Laws very from state to state. In Pa we don't have smog but we do require an emissions sticker, but they only require a visual inspection of the cat. If it's there, it passes. Or, what would be the best bet, is hold onto your stock cat and switch it back in come inspection time.

They are illegal in IL, we do have emissions testing. You'll pass as long your car isn't throwing any CEL.
