Question Totally new to Evo's, looking for some info!

Hi everyone, my name is Chuck and i drive an 03 Cavalier. Needless to say not the sportiest car in the world but it gets me around. Recently i have set my sights on an Evo VIII or IX, i have always loved how they look and the AWD and boost is a huge improvement over the cav.

Now i only have a slight idea of the differences between a VIII and an IX, could anyone fill me in on the major differences between the two or the pros/cons of either model?

Also what should i look for when buying a used Evo? What kind of things should i look out for? and what is a decent price range?

thanks in advance for any help!

Well this is the newbie board

MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system)

change in camshaft timing as a function of rpm that enables good flow at high rpms while maintaining good torque at low rpms. Between that and the turbo the ix really starts to pull around 3k

The IX will give you more power mod-for-mod than an VIII. If you're goal is to mod, than the IX will be your better choice. As long as it's in your price range, go for the IX.

Go for a IX, don't bother getting a VIII because you will regret it in the end because the IX takes mods better.

There are also some turbo differences between the IX and the VIII. The IX in my opinion starts you in a better spot than the VIII.

But then again price can play a big factor too.

Only the MR models come with the 6-speed manual. 2005 VIII and 2006 IX both have an MR model. But, the 6-speed doesn't seem to have much advantage (if any) in mpg based on what the guys on this forum report. So, not sure if there is much of an advantage there.

the mileage is worse with the six speed. MR 6th is close to a normal 5th, and having to shift more makes for only slightly worse mileage. Mitsu also rated the MR 1mpg less city/highway mileage on the sticker than the 5 speeds.
