Newbie needs help

i have an S197 mustang GT and im getting pretty bored with it and want an import again. im deciding on either an STI or EVO, kind of leaning towards the EVO
because its easier to mod. my question is what are some problems the EVO's are known to run into? transmission, engine, suspension problems that i would have to looks for? im going to search but i kind of need this head start to get me going. thanks a lot.

Well I've only owned my Evo for two months, but what I've learned is that the
4G63 is pretty much indestructible unless you start going crazy with mods then the bottom end has to be strengthened. The 5-speed in the regular Evo is a little bit stronger than the 6-speed in the MR. The only other problems are the stock clutch and the transfer case. Both will fail if abused a lot and the TC can fail even if you don't abuse it. I have never heard of any suspension issues in the Evo, it handles amazingly well. Hope this helps.

One other point was that the MR and I think one other sub model had an Aluminum roof. The view seems to be if drag racing avoid the 6 speed.

Yes that is correct, the MR and the SE have aluminum roofs. Actually I believe the RS has it as well. The 5-speed is the preferred transmission for drag useage, although the 6-speed isn't as weak as a lot of people say it is. Its only in a road race situation where you might overheat the transmission that the fourth gear can break.

aside from clutch probs. in the 03-04, and some trannies had 4-5 or 1-2 issues the car is as good as you treat it.
