Hey guys, I bought a WRX (no flames) when it first came out and drove it for 4 years. got a decent 300whp (no laughs i was in college) out of it and sold it for a cobra. A 600whp cobra to be exact, and now i want back in to the AWD drive club. The cobra is just not any fun compared to what you can do in our style of cars. Unless you want to buy it cause its for sale
Sorry for the backdrop, but just saying hi. I want to get another car and still debating if I should go back to the subie or come to the dark side

I am going to buy a used ride since I am starting to rebuild a 69 Firebird. I know you can get mass amounts of power out of the 4g3, I am just wondering what is reliable power for the tranny? I know the clutch was weak from the factory but how does the tranny hold up and to what power level? thanks!

oh and i am looking into 03 evo 8's. I dont know if there are different trannies from model years (need to do some more research). I have one in my sights and its making about 350hp/380tq to the wheels. I got to imagine that 5 speed has to be hurting?
350hp range, you should be fine with the stock trans. so long as you dont launch it too often, almost everyone here has the stock trans. The clutch though, plan on changing that eventually. The evo is a really nice car, I have owned 2 subby's and I wouldnt go back to them, unless the X doesnt add up. 350 hp is reasonable and within range for not alot of $. Would cost you twice that to pull it from a subaru. Plus the evo is sexy. Just test out the dark side and go drive one.
Welcome to the boards, once you drive one Im sure youll be around here for a while.

Very nice Cobra man, I've always thought they looked tough. I like the idea of having both a fast straightliner and a corner carver. Later on down the road I'm planning on swapping the heads, cam and pumping up the compression on my 69 Chevelle and aiming for at least 600 hp. Should kill me pretty fast.
Good luck finding your Evo and your Firebird project.

It sounds like you're ready to give an Evo a shot. They're much easier and cheaper to get more power out of in comparison to WRXs and STIs, plus our cars have FAR less understeer... quite minimal, for it being a nose-heavy AWD car. As the other guys have already said, the 5-speed can put up with those hp targets pretty easily, assuming you don't do drop-clutch launches on a regular basis. The clutch, however, might need a replacement with those numbers. But there are guys who have hit 90k on the stock clutch, plus a few guys between 70k and 80k with pretty decent mods and a decent amount of track time.
unfortunately its not, its the now historic kb 2.2. i got it on when it was the only upgraded supercharger available but now there are tons out there...
its fun in a straightline! but i just dont like the overall feel of the car and to tell you the truth the car makes me nervous that something is going to break everytime i punch it. but when i slam the gas it is a head turner, esp with the feminitas

...and is that a KB 2.8?
600whp not fun
