One of the reasons I like to change my own oil is because I don't like putting a dry oil filter on the car. I fill it with oil first. Dealerships and quick change places generally don't do that.

Your local municipality should provide you with milk jugs with screw on tops for the oil and a plastic baggy for the filter.

Drain oil . . . yuk

Well, where I live, there's an Auto Zone and an Advance right down the street. They both offer a service where you simply bring in your used oil and tell them "I have used oil". They take you in the back and there's a big container. You dump your oil in and take the container with you (for future filling, even...). It's pretty easy. Milk jugs and such work best.

PS - do wear black gloves. Maybe I'm just an idiot, but I always seem to get oil on my hands.

Hehe, agreed. I really need to get myself some mechanic's gloves as my old moutain bike gloves (which work well since they're grippy and tough) are beginning to get gross. Out of curiosity, does no here have curbside pickup by their city's (municipality's as I noted earlier) waste dept?

I know we don't. If I put my filter in the trash I have to hide it. They don't want any automotive stuff in the trash. But then again, the people running my city are morons...
