Clutch Slip???
Clutch Slip???
What up guys...
I just got an Evo IX MR... I LOVE this car... its exhilarating.
Anyway... I got the car used with 11k miles... I know these cars have clutch issues and the person that owned it before me has a few ricer mods... atmospheric BOV, etc.
I noticed when I step on the gas from an idle or cruising speed, it creeps then launches... it has a ooooooo-MMMMMMM sound. I first thought it was the Map switching over to a higher setting(?)... I am not hugely familiar with this car... I have learned alot from this forum over the last 2 days, and I thank you guys in advance for any help or advice.

well what your first experiencing there is turbo lag. I'm no turbo guru so I don't want to confuse you by expalining it but someone here can explain it better than me. And if your also hearing a slight whine in 1st and 2nd when taking off it's usually normal in evo's. The evo drivetrain makes alot of noise that you'll need to get used to. read up on it though because some noises are very bad
clutch slip is when you hit the gas hard and the RPM's climb really fast but the car doesn't go anwhere at all. Usually starts in higher gears

I am familiar with Turbo Lag, Creep, etc... it could be lag but the power seems to gain then Jump... I will watch the revs closer next time. If it is Clutch Slip its just starting to go out, not totally gone yet.
I also have a S14 w/ SR with about $45K in mods, although I have not been able to drive it on the streets for the last 3 years.

I have an OS Giken STR Twin Plate in the SR.
I am not very familiar with the Evo and what I should expect... I honestly have never delt with Clutch Slip... ever... I know that sounds very odd... maybe just luck... About to go run the Evo again and see what I can find out.
OK... being its a Sunday Night in NOLA... I went to the Lakefront to see if anyone was out there... and I lucked out... a Red Evo 8 with about 500hp... guy knew alot and was a mechanic for one of the dealerships.
Confirmed... it is Clutch Slip... its very very mild right now, but he said it will get bad FAST!!
On the ride out I watched the RPMs... in 5th gear at about 60MPH around 3000RPM... if you drop the hammer the RPMs go up to 4500 as the engine revs then it drops back down to 3000 and then starts to pull. It acts almost like an automatic trans shifting, but not when shifting.
Soooo... just got the car yesterday, and I will be ordering an OS Giken STR tomorrow...awsome.
