Evo VIII owner... Light mods, few ?
So the story goes a couple years ago I went looking for my dream car.
after seeing all the posters of the Yellow Evo, I wanted a yellow evo. I started researching Evo's and decided if I wanted Yellow the best combo for a Daily Driver would be an 05 (acd, bigger turbo, and after 05 yellow wasnt offered) but also wanted a few options so SSL was in order... so there the search started.
A few months in I see on Ebay a car about 6 hours away at a Lexus Dealership exactly what I wanted. in there ad it said 05 Evo SSL 12k yellow, Mods: Cam gears, gauges, turbo timer. mostly stock
Knowing the 05 had 5year 60k warrenty I liked the sound of that talked on the phone with the dealer, had them send me the paperwork, got everything said and done went and picked up the car.
On the drive home I noticed a lumpy Idle (played it off as the cam gears) and it only boosted 12psi (I really didnt know what the stock boost was) thought that was normal....
After a few weeks of ownership I ran into a fellow evo owner, and we chit chated he said he had a tune and boosted 26psi I thought that was crazy as that was over double mine.... he looked at me like I was looney and ask what I was boosting, told him 12. he asked me to open my hood and this is what he found:
Braided Clutch line
Cams
adjustable cam gears
Injectors
Fuel Pump 255 walbro
Braided brake-lines
ARP headstuds
Boost control pills
So he reset my battery and it started boosting 25psi.....
seance then I have put a ACT-HDSS clutch in, a QTP downpipe/cutoff, and an intake.
and the car moves.
now 2 days ago, I had the car retuned.... I pulled the Boost Pills and put on a boost controller, tuned it to 28psi
the tuner determined the injectors to be 680cc
and he said the cams are atleast 272.... but we are unsure... the only thing i can make out on the cam is a K in a circle cast just below the oil cap.... (any help here would be great)
thinking about selling.... should I swap it all back to stock and have the dealer look at it?
also if anyone knows the orgianl owner that would be AWSOME.... according to car fax it came from Albany NY.

How could he tell from looking underthe hood that it had ARP headstuds, cams, and walbro 255? The fuel pump isn't even in the hood so unless he pulled the gas tank cover and removed it how would he know?
But all things aside that good u got it running good but sucks ur grinding... especially in 5th.
If you can afford it i'd just get the tranny rebuilt/built.
Going back to stock with all that is going to suck and wouldn't really be worth the time and effort.

well he found some, other mod's where found later... the headstuds you can see the tip of, by pulling the oil cap and shinning a flashlight in... I have not had the Valve cover off yet.... and no compression test.... might have aftermarket pistons for all i know.....
also the springs for the valves dont taper off towards the top as I was told the stock evo ones do... so the cams may be 280....with new springs and retainers
I agree returning to stock would be a huge PITA... wonder how far i need to go before they would not notice mods?

Your 5th gear synchro needs to be replaced. Same thing happened to me and dealer took care of it no questions asked. Mine was bone stock though. Considering you bought it from the dealer already modded they may not give you a hassle. One way to find out, good luck.
ya but I bought it from a lexus dealer... the Mitsu dealers here SUCK, and was told they will raise hell for modded evo's....
I did call Mitsu amarica and check my warrenty they said it was fully intack with no flags (AKA probably hasn't seen a dealer with mods yet) so I risk losing the warrenty if I take it in like this.... I was thinking if I get rid of the lumpy idel (cams and ajust cam gears to 0 and cover them with the timeing belt cover) and peel the stickers on the injectors, throw the stock air box back in... it might be enough they wont notice its modded....

Unfortunately, you changed the clutch. If they were to service the tranny that would be a dead give away and they will not cover it. I am confused why it was in limp mode before resetting the battery. I am guessing through Ecu flash maybe valet mode was activated. Aftermarket cams will sound lumpy no matter what thats normal especially 272 or larger, but thats at idle

the clutch will void warrenty? but it needed a clutch? hmmm mabye ill just go chat with the service department at one of the dealers.... but not take the car with.
