touchy subject, evo or b5 s4
I traded my 05 s4 with 15k in for a new evo 9 ..I don't regret it one bit. If your older you may get sick of the evo, but the evo is forsure much more fun to drive! I do miss some of the little things like the passing signal and cruise control. Its was a little hard getting used to driving a lancer vs an S4. The s4 was a hot car. The b4 is definitly dated. I vote evo 9-10 all the way, nothing less!
The price of parts is what would make my decision. S4 parts are EXPENSIVE! Modding an Audi is terribly pricey. Tune ups and other things are expensive. Performance parts are expensive. A friend of mine has an older 2.7LTT S4 and it is pretty fast but he had to practically sell his kidney to afford the mods.
i think the guys saying that audi mods are expensive are going a little overboard. parts arent that expensive, and seem to be coming down too. k04 and gt turbo kits are coming down a lot in price now that these cars are getting cheaper in the used car market. i think a lot of high hp b5 S4 are going to be lurking real soon. my friend is building his in someone elses garage, and even with tons of custom parts, he isnt spending crazy amounts of money.. and im talking heads, cams, single turbo, built block, clutch.... should be a beast
that being said, i still vote evo. get a white one, they are the fastest color.

owned a stage II+ b5 s4 (turboback and chip). it was a pricey one to run but a very nice riding car. the evo is far cheaper to maintain, mod but the ride is much harder and not really a good cruiser for long trips. it depends on what you are looking for out of the car. if you want something that is quick, nice riding and you have some extra money go for the audi. if you want a solid car out of the box that is cheap to maintain and mod go for the evo
My brother had a B5 S4 for a while and I've been rather partial to them ever since. Bottom line for me is that it's just plain nicer than the Evo. Faster? No. Better handling? No. Cheaper to mod? Hell no. But nicer? I think so. Especially the interior. Hard to top the sound they make too.
That said, his K03s went and it would have cost a **** ton to replace them, so he had to get rid of it. The Evo is a lot more reliable and practical, not to mention more fun for someone my age, so that's why I went with it. I love both. It really depends on what you're looking for. If you have the money to mod/maintain a B5 S4, it's hard to find a better compromise of performance and luxury.

I own both a stage 3 S4 and a built Evo.. really depends on what you want.
The quality and features of my Audi **** all over the Evo. Evo just feels cheap.
On the other hand when I'm buying Evo parts it's like going to a Honda from the Audi everything is cheaper and the power can be made much easier.
So are you going for quality and comfort with decent performance with no worry for money? Or are you after performance but don't mind losing quality and comfort and easier on the wallet?

Friend of mine (Audi head) loves the B5's but said even though the B6 is slower its less of a headache.
I love the body style but I don't like to cost of ownership vs Evo's.

I had a B6 S4 for a few months. I fancy myself pretty decent with working on cars but that thing was beyond me. Ended up needing a minor service that cost almost $1000. I didn't have the money for that then so I got rid of it with a quickness. It was a good car but I was actually a bit underwhelmed by the performance of it. Still, the combination of performance and luxury was really hard to beat. They have terrible resale value though and have two services that are exceptionally expensive - timing chain and flywheel.
From a performance standpoint my EVO feels tighter and faster than the S4 could ever be. It's not as quiet but I'm ok with that. Plan on keeping the EVO around until it runs no more

APR's stage III kit for the B5 costs 9 grand, does not include a required aftermarket exhaust, and only pushes 450hp at the crank on pump gas whereas I have spent less than half that to upgrade my Evo 9 to get to the same hp.
If you want an Evo obviously you can get all the info you need on this site..
If you end up wanting an S4 the best way imo is to buy one already stage 3.. you'll save a decent amount of money
Yes the parts are getting cheaper and the cars and with that comes people willing to take more risks and spend more money.. I agree with that other guy, there has been some sleeper S4's out there for years but with just finding out that the 2.8 blocks are perfect for building a motor and GT kits are coming down and single kits are being made.. you're only likely to see a fast one soon(er) near you
PS. APR sucks
