Buying a Used Evo 2003-2005 Model Years....
Hello Everyone,
I've been reading the boards here for a while, so I decided to sign up and start some converstations
Although I don't currently own an Evo, I will be buying one next year. I have to say many of you guys are very knowledgeable and extremely helpful to others, and the conversations (and pictures) of many of the Evo's on here I find, are throughly engaging. I've seen some posts similar to my inquiry here today, but I thought I'd ask a bit more after doing some online searching for Used Evo's.....I have to say I'm VERY confused about the price range to model year ratio to Mileage, etc, that it seems to be SO different across the board...and even from the same dealer!! when it comes to pricing..almost seems like there is no logic at all LOL....so here goes:
I'm looking for an Evo between Model Years 2003 through 2005..which on my budget and price range, that seems the most financially fit for me..The thing is, the PRICE RANGE seems to go anywhere from a 2005 Evo with 25K miles on it for roughly $21,000, to a 2003 at the same dealer with 40,000 Miles on it, at $22K...you see my dilemma here. and OLDER EVo with more Miles on it, for $1,000 more than a 3 year newer Evo with 15,000 Miles less. Mind you, these are at dealerships, but in some instances, the very same dealership. In some cases, both are RS models...Further examples here from Cars.com:
These Evos are from a Dealership in Jamaica New York called Luxury Auto Gallery --
2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution - $21,999 -- Mileage: 19,500
2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS - $21,995 -- Mileage: 22,905
2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution - $20,999 -- Mileage: 32,000
2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution - $19,777 -- Mileage: 81,000
You notice how the 2005 is cheaper than the 03 and 04, even though it has 12K miles more
. Whats even crazier is that this same dealer has that 03 Evo with 81K miles on it for only about a grand less than the Evo thats an 05 with only 32K miles
!!!!!!
Now, I come across this one...which is right around the corner from me in Connecticut where I live, and I have seen it up close on my day off (dealer was closed though) This one is pretty smokin in person:
2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS - $21,995 -- Mileage: 30,118
But then I'll see another peculiar pricing yet AGAIN LOL (Also in CT):
2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS - $20,995 -- 36,646 mi
This one makes the 05 with Less Mileage more attractive, AND its a year newer for any a $1,000 less!?
So my question good people of Evo Land.....I need your input so as I shell out cash next spring/summer, what is going on with these prices and what exactly is causing the influx..what I should I be aware of from the get go....Info Please ... I've been doing my homework on these cars performance wise, and ive been wanting one for a while, But I just need to know what to look for when comparing prices between the model years in this bracket..
Thanks in advance

Not really for racing, except with the occasional stop light or quick highway that somebody may try to start with
I hear stories of Evo owners frequently getting "tested" at random when they are out and about.

RS models are cheaper because they lack the creature comforts such as power windows/locks, radio, HIDs, or a sunroof. Though the wiring is there for a radio, I dont mind being less radio in my RS
I listen to the motor.
I suggest you search through the model info stuff.
Check out the new site evogarage.net. Alot of stats and model info are easily found there.

The price influx probably has something to do with 1) dealer's lack of knowledge about the car, 2) the dealer does know and maybe the car has been through modifications, 3) or there's some cosmetic damages? I've seen over 231 Evo's for sale all over the nation with varying prices. It boggles my mind as well.
If I were you, I would just ask $18K out the door for any of the cars you see. Start negotiating from that number until you and the dealer agree. If the dealer doesn't like it, just say you'll take your business else where. There seems to be plenty of Evo's out there wanting to be sold.

The 05's have ACD, a front helical limited slip, and a bigger turbine housing compared to the 03-04. It's a signficant improvement for a road course car. For drag.... doesn't really matter what year.

That 03 with less miles than the 05 in Jamaica, NY has a few mods. The 05 is completely stock. Stay away from that 05, I got my eye on that for when I get back.
Some dealers are completely retarded though.

Go with the 05.
But if you can, keep shopping around.
I know you feel like you have multiple options now, but if you give it time you can find a even more perfect Evo for you.
Since it's going to be your DD / WW I would recommend keeping an eye out for a IX.
Basically my car is the same use and with a couple simple mods (in my sig) with MIVEC, you'll be happy
#1 Tip: DONT RUSH IT!

Under 40k miles and I say get the newer one. Over 40k and something with fewer miles would be better than newer.
well... for what it's worth, i would never buy anything from that dealer...
i actually traveled there from philly almost 2 years ago when i was looking for my evo because they always had a few listed on cars.com
the place is straight ghetto, the salesmen are carbon copies of that guy from the simpsons that's just trying to get a deal any way he can, and i asked simple questions about the vehicle i was interested in and they looked at me like i had 3 heads, totally clueless as to what to say.
i ended up buying an '05 GSR SSL bone stock with 18k closer to me in PA where the salesmen was a down to earth young guy that knew what he was talking about and worked with me. made such a difference.
