Newb Question - s2k vs Evo 8-9 maintenance
Hey guys I'm pretty new to the Evo crowd, I know the basics of Evo 8/9s but I was just wondering what the difference in operating costs of the two are.
I'm sure three are some s2k owners that made the transition from s2k ---> Evo so if you did please chime in. I know the insurance will be higher, the last time I got a quote I believe it was about $300 - $400 a year higher than my s2k.
I know the gas mileage will probably be close, maybe a little worse than the S (which I currently get 24-25mpg mostly city). But other than fluid changes and tires @30k miles I haven't had to put any money in it for maintenance. How does this compare to the Evo?
Thank in advance guys.

Right, I understand that. But I don't think the small difference in gas mileage can account for too much. i was more leaning towards the maintenance side of things, is maintenance on an Evo that much than an S?
evo is DEF worse to insure. Ive had both, I had an AP1 and now i have a IX. Im 23, clean record, no violations what so ever. I had insurance with allstate ( known to be more expensive ) and for the S2k when I was 21 it was about 210 a mo. I just got a quote, now im 23 and they want 485 a month for the evo, lol. As for maint, you have to realize that the evo has more parts to go bad ie t-case, awd is harder on a clutch etc. I had the s2k and got it up to 108k w/o doing anything but oil changes. BUT if your into modding your car and want serious power, youll be better off getting the EVO, youll spend 5x as much to try and get the power out of a S2k that you can get out of an evo. As for gas mileage, if your hard on your car at ALL, gas is gonna be a huge difference, the evo DRINKS it. I was getting about the same as you with the s2k, now on my Evo, if I drive it spiritedly at all i might get 200 on a tank, lol. One of the big differences I had to get used to was going to the Evo tranny from the S2k. The S2k seriously has one of the SMOOTHEST trannies ever, not the same in the evo, lol. But just make sure you keep some extra money incase something like the tcase goes out ( about 2.5k to fix if you cant find used ) which would be one of the most expensive failures that could happen, and from there your gtg, the fluids and stuff you can do on your own and arent that often!

I have both
I am 26 and bought the evo when I turned 25 and got the s2000 6 months ago. I got a pretty good deal on the S2000. It is a 2003 AP1 with 50,000 miles on it and I got it for $14,500.
To answer the insurance question, my S2K was MORE than my EVO IX MR. It was I think $40 more because it is a roadster. I have a clean driving record and have never been in an accident. I agree the transmission is way smoother. I was debating working on the engine over the winter but I may just keep it stock. It is a very fun car to drive but when I want the power I turn to my EVO IX MR.
I now have my eye on a Vanilla Chrysler 300 Touring for my daily driver.

Same boat here! The Evo is going to be about 30$ more a month for me. I'm 28, a clean record and with State Farm. I'm changing insurance companies this week though, USAA thanks to the Fiancee! I was worried about extra maintenance expenses as well, but I have done my research and am very confident in purchasing a IX. Which I will be doing Saturday if all goes as planned.
I've had AP1 and AP2 in the past and now I have an IX RS. But I have had the s2ks in the states and now I have the EVO in Hong Kong so I can't give you any insurance comparisons.
From my knowledge, both are on the expensive side. Few years ago different friends of different age and record including me quoted E46 M3, EVO VIII and AP2 S2000 on insurance sites. Generally everyone higher rates on evo and s2k than the m3, and there were some differences between the location, and then the companies. Of course your age and record mattered as well, but when quoted at the same place and company, the ratio stayed similar (s2k : evo : m3) though not exactly the same.
Maintenance wise, I had no issues with AP1 for 2 months, AP2 for two years, evo for 1.5 years and only had to pay for recommended services. I guess I am lucky with not picking lemons. Even the '95 grand cherokee I had for three years had no issues other than some kids smashing the windshield overnight.
Both are very very fun cars, s2k is like grandma's home baked cookies and evo is like Krispy Kreme

Ok I don't know about the rest of you, and I don't know the numbers on an s2k. My insurance doesn't seem that expensive. I'm insured through Progressive and for full coverage and a ridiculously high amount of casualties ($300,000+) It's like $108 dollars a month. Granted I have a clean record and I'm married but I'm only 23. I'd say thats damn cheap.
2nd I got around 24-25 highway stock 19 in the city, After some mods. Tune exhaust , ICpiping I get around 27 highway and 22 city as long as I stay out of boost, which come on guys its not that difficult
plus its easier to pass with the wifes approval since its a four door and can go anywhere in any season. 400 Hp drives through the snow and you can still put a baby seat in the back? YES PLEASE...

I have never had an EVO, but I do have an S2k and can vouch that it is low low maintenance. I have a 2007 that I bought brand new last March. Now @ 27k...no problems. Only things i've had to do were frequent fluid changes and 4 sets of tires...mostly due to track duty
I would assume the EVO would be a little more maintenance just due to the fact that it has a turbo.
