Buying a IX... Help Please

update on post #16... need help and/or suggestions on asking dealer price

thanks

Hello everyone, I have been lurking here quite a bit and I have found 2 Evos that I am interested in. Both are IXs and one is an SE. They have similar mileage and below are the links to both cars. I ran both VIN numbers thru a local Mitsu dealer and the SE came back that it had over $4k dollars of warranty work done to it. The guy told me it was to replace the transfer case. The other MR... I believe its an MR but it has the SSL package I believe as the seats are leather. Both have the 5 Speed transmissions which I have read here that its preffered over the 6 speed.

My questions are....

Is it ok to buy one with warranty work done to the transfer case?

I would like to have the SE but the other one also has the nicer interior that is also a bit rarer or at least I think it is...

any other advice would be helpful. Also if anyone here recognizes either of these Evos please lemme know or if anyone has experience dealing with either of the 2 dealerships...

thanks

The one in Jersey is a GSR with SSL. The one in Daytona is a SE.

I'd take the one in Daytona Beach if it were me, but they are very close. How do you intend to bring it back to DC?

My reasons:

#1 More than likely driven around here in Florida - no salt and year round good weather.

#2 Lower price and it's an SE

See if you can post up in the SE regional section to have someone go take a look or pretend to be a buyer for you in Daytona Beach. If it were Orlando I'd do you a favor, but there are Evo owners on here closer. I think that car has been for sale for a little while... I have seen others tempting it.

SE is somewhat nice and rarer, and if the other one is a 5spd like you said than its not a MR, its a GSR with SSL package. the MR comes with a 6spd. i agree with the one driven in the sun, but you should look into the extent of transfer case damage and how it happened, may be a sign that the owner raced the car. gl with your decision either way your getting an evo so your already better off than every STi owner!

Ok, I am new here so its why I am asking about the various models and the trannys, I am from the STI community and I would be glad to help someone if they were making the jump to an STI. I have read the FAQ on the various models and its not completely clear on transmissions for the various models.

I would appreciate any further post by anyone... thanks to those who have posted so far...

I would steer clear of the SE. A IX SE is my highest recommended trim (no coincidence I have one) but one that has a t-case replaces probably has been beat. Of course this depends on the circumstances of the repair, but t-cases are the first to go on a car that is launched improperly on a regular basis. Unless you know the exact reason behind the repair, the safest thing to do is keep looking... Though definitely go with a 5-spd. Good luck!

I would go with the SE, 5-speed is the way to go; ill be changing my 6-speed in the future; the plus is the MR SE RS all have aluminum fender, roof, and hood for lighter weight. I think the SE has the revised IX turbo too.

1. What is a "revised IX turbo?" All USDM IXs have the same engines.

2. All Evos have an aluminum hood and fenders. IX RS, SE, and MR add an aluminum roof.

if the SE had a clean bill of health, I would have chosen the SE. But since you said that it had some major transfercase warranty work done to it, I will steer clear of it. take the IX with SSL and with low mileage, you will be much happier and sleep better.

I appreciate everyones responses, after giving some additional thoughts and for what I will be using the EVO I would say the GSR with the SSL will probably be a nice pick. I would like to find an SE but it seems most of the ones that I keep running into have issues or lots of warranty work on. This is the second SE I had the VIN ran and its had issues. I love the interior of the SSL and to me the differences of the SE(the lighter roof and so one) are not a major difference that would warrant me to pick over an SSL with no past issues. I will most likely go with the GSR SSL if the price is aggreeable. At this point I spoken with the sales manager and he told me he's had the vehicle for some time in his floor and would like to move it. If he comes under 25k I will most likely pull the trigger although the cheaper the better. I really like the fact that the SSL has had no warranty work and has more time left for warranty and its stock. I plan to do minor mods, mainly cosmetic, first thing I will do is buy some springs and a set of wheels and tint the windows. I may do some minor power mods like an Turboback exhaust later but I plan to keep the engine stock for the most part.

any further advice is always appreciate it and I am very happy and looking forward to becoming an EVO owner... thanks all for the help

update.... well I decided to go with the GSR SSL and the VIN checks out as not having any warranty work done and its stock. The sales manager says he will "work" with me on the price and so far he has given me $26500 as a quote. I am gonna loose my rear end on the trade but I really do not care as I do not see selling the STi for much more than maybe 25k on my own. I still think 26,500 is still too much for this car... there are Xs selling used for 27,500 for crying out loud... what do you guys suggest as being a fair deal??? I would think more like $25k would fair.... and anything less than 24k being a good deal...?? Any suggestions???
