ok, here is the question, I currently have an evo 8 and I like the fairly long powerband, I have also driven an sti with the 6 speed, and the powerband is so short, it is like shift, shift, shift,....and shift some more....is the six speed on the evo 9 mr more like the 5 speed in the evo, or the six in the sti?
umm that makes zero sense. The 6 speed wont be like a 5 speed in any car, itll be like a 6 speed. The only difference will be the sti's 2.5. Its is much more torquier (is that a word?) you'll still be shifting, shifting and shifting a lot more than a 5. If you want a auto x car, 6 speed is where you want to be. Drag cars usually run the 5 cuz of that one less shift.

thanks for the uuuuumm....response, it was just a simple question, I know on other 6 speed cars (i.e. supra, corvette) they have a much longer powerband than the sti......and all cars are different.
so lets hear from someone else who has driven both the six in the sti and the mr and see what their opionion is.
You have to understand those cars will do well over 160mph. Thats why they feel longer. But that is my input, owning a 5 speed evo and haven driven both, a 6 speed evo and an sti. My .02

What you're really feeling is the taller gears due to one less gear to split up the ratios. The 6 speeds have narrower ratios.
In other words what you're feeling is that extra few rpm's in every gear of the 5 spd that otherwise you'd already be shifting by in the 6 spd. The 6 spd really shines with big turbo stockish rev limit since you're in the power band more often than not every time you shift. And you don't have that nasty bog in 5th gear like the gsr's. Now if they only made it handle the power a bit better. Not to mention the 6 spd's notorious synchro problem.
However in a drag car the 5 spd is optimal, it's one less shift and with limiters approaching 10k rpm's turbo spool is not an issue since they never drop under 6-7k upshifting.

So you're lovin the look of the mr but want a 5spd? That's a wise decision on your part. A local buddy of mine is breaking around 450 to the wheels and is already looking forward to a 5 speed swap. Or you can always buy a gsr and get some mr/se parts aftermarket or second hand through the classifieds/ebay/ect.
You pay for a lot of things in the se/mr models that you can otherwise get cheaper aftermarket or will probably switch out anyway down the road. Such as wheels/vg's/suspension ect...

Oh okay. Well i have a fully loaded 8 with hid/sunroof ect. And i wouldn't have it any other way. And personally i love my interior as well. I'm a bby so it works out for me due to the matching inserts on the seats. Plus yea i love the mr/se bbs's but as far as an ix gsr or a VIII gsr's wheels i'd much rather have the enkei's from the 8.
all mitsu dealership will void warranty... cept for a few... haha.
I'm guessing you left a fingerprint on the hood latch?

if you want your 6 speed to go further its going to require some head work, and a tune. to carry the power a bigger turbo would be good to.
but you can just go with a bigger set of cams, and some good valve springs, and upping the rev limit, you'll be able to get a lot more out of each gear. the stock turbo will be losing steam, but to a point you can get away with reving higher then normal and going faster. but there will be a point where you will rev to far and it wont go faster. thats where the bigger turbo is needed.
