I've been thinking about picking up an Evo. I pretty much narrowed it down to an RS, but I'm not sure which year I want. I know most of the model year changes but my question is mostly about the ACD and this article:

Basically I'd be getting it for a track car, and while the issues mentioned in the article probably wouldn't be noticed immediately, it's a concern I want to address before buying the vehicle.

I guess my question is, should I go for the '04 and not have to worry about this all together, or would an '05 with the ACD still be a better platform to start with. Also, is there a way to tell if a particular Evo will be able to utilize the RA ACD controller? In the article, the driver mentions he has a IX RS and it works. I like the IXs too, but would prefer to stay with the non MIVEC.

Why do you want to stay away from MIVEC? Additional power and engine control is a good thing IMO.

Take your time or you'll probably regret it.

 

I'll quickly give you my opinion. First, mivec. Not sure why you are anti-mivec. Mivec makes more power... plus evo 9's have a bigger turbo, so combine that with mivec and you get more power. If you are planning on modding it, I'd suggest you get a 9, hands down. Much easier to make power gains on a 9 than an 8.

As for the ACD controls, you can switch between tarmac, gravel, and snow. Mine has never left tarmac, but I've only tracked it twice... on tarmac haha.

At the end of the day, I don't really see any reason to buy an evo 8 now that there are evo 9's and 10's out.

 

Mostly was going with the VIII b/c I was eventually planning on the BR272s. I wanted a IX before I found out about those. I figured if I was going to change the turbo and the cams eventually anyway, why pay the extra money for a IX.

From posts I've read before, the general consensus was if you're going to mod heavily, go with the VIII. Plus, they're less expensive.

Also, maybe I didn't word the title properly. I meant the question was quick, not the Evo search. I got all the time in the world to find the right one.

My main concern with the ACD was how the article described it reacting during long turns and how it produced inconsistent lap times. If this is something that can be fixed with the RA ACD controller, then fine. If there's no way to tell if The RA unit will work on a particular car, or it doesn't work with most, what's to steer me away from an '04 RS?
