Buying an 03 evo and have some ?s

As the title says I am buying an 03 bby evo with 39k on the odo. The car has few things done to it but not much cusco front/ perrin rear swaybars whiteline endlinks front & rear perrin foam filter excedy hyper single clutch blitz gauges buddyclub pro spec exhaust stoptech slotted rotors porterfield r4s brake pads apexi turbo timer. Anyway I'm not worried about the mods because all the stock parts are included with the car so if I don't like something I will just replace it with the stock parts. My questions are what should I look for when I actually see the car in person besides ofcouse leaks, vin numbers on everything, rust ect...I'm talking about stuff that is known problems of these cars. Just want to get a heads up of what to look for....Thank for any info you can give me and I look forward to being a member of this website.

What to look for...

A look for transfer case whine in 3rd and 4th gear. Listen for any slight slop in the gears when you're in 3rd or 4th and let off the gas. If there is slop, it's probably been rebuilt... which could be a good thing as rebuilt ones can be stronger than factory.

Look on the oil return line on the turbo for leaks, look for any wear on the suspension. Also pay attention to the clutch, where it engages etc. With that many miles (depending how hard it's been driven) it may need to be replaced. Really step on it in 3rd. If the R's go up with out it putting you in the seat, clutch could be weak.

Lastly, it'd be wise to get a compression test done. You really don't want to buy an evo with low compression as that is expensive and a PITA to fix.

Thanks everyone for your input....I thought it looked like a good deal but since the guy lives so far away I am only going to get a test drive before I buy it and I'd hate to have a bunch of problem with it as soon as I get home. What do I need for a compression test.....I'm sure there's a specific tool I need and I probably could rent one from autozone. What should the numbers look like? Would the clutch release be different with the aftermarket clutch or pretty much the same? Thanks again.

A compression gauge. The local parts store should have one. When I got mine, my compression was 165 170 170 165

I like the blue but not stuck on buying a blue one. The deal is I'm trading this guy my 98 Acura Integra and some cash for his evo. He might even be a member on here I have no idea. I've seen someone do a compression test but I can't remember exactly what he did..do you remove the spark plug then test each cylinder or does the plug stay in?

I know there are some good deals but I still owe a little $$ on my teg and can't get anybody but high school kids that want to buy it and ofcouse most of them don't have the $$ or the means to finance it. So I get rid of the teg and get my dream car and I think it's a good deal...All together I'm going to be getting this evo for 16k..

pull the plug out and disconnect the cam angle sensor. screw the tester in the place of plug and crank and hold the key for about 5 "bumps"

Thanks for all of the info...I'll have to get that tool to do a compression test when I see the car. The car seems to have been well taken car of...39k on an 03 means it seen a lot of garage time. So besides the compression test and the transfer case and tranny anything else I should be looking for?

Its a serious investment. The last thing you want to do is buy a car and spend money to fix it
