Evo 9 5 speed or 6 speed?
Well im brand new to this place, hence me posting in newbie forum! Ive had to choose between a 06sti, s2k, e46, evo 9 for my new car. I used to be a honda FREAK and talked alot of **** on turbos( which made no sense, just being a hater$$$). Yeah i was the dude with the all motor sticker! Yeah the one with the turbo crossed out. And ive also had a toyota pkup, which i built for rock crawling and trailing, very fun! Obviously ive chosen the evo and to tell you the truth ive wanted one since ive seen the evo IV, and wow, how things have changed. But enough of that, i basically need to know pros and cons between 5 speed and 6 speed, i know 6 speed only in MR, and i know i want to travel in my evo and i do want to mod but not right away, and when i mean mod i mean bigger turbo/ internals etc. O and another thing is, i will be using in canyons alot! I LOVE CANYONS!
Simply put... if you mod the car ANY, then DONT do the MR with the 6 speed.. I have regretted getting an MR since 2005... Go with an 06 IX SE .. comes with a 5 speed.. and is MUCH stronger.. period.
why do people think the Mr is a peace, they wouldnt make a car with a glass tranny, and all the racers have them. go look at evo ix mr on youtube, and there are more race track videos then anything else about MRs, ive heard it hold up to 450 whp, then problems start to happen, i think i might trade in my 5 spead for an mr with low miles, cause im only hoping for what ever 272s(springs and retainers), intake, ic and piping, 24 psi, tbe. and good tune, daily driver and NO track time or drag, and maybe a few launches but not over 5k launch
I have a 2005 MR and it is mildly modded. 48K and still on stock clutch and zero tranny issues. 280 whp and 250 Torque all at the wheels Ecuflash self tuned Maybe if you push 450 whp and use the car to drag race and launch but no prob other wise. Mostly it is 4-5-6 gears that take a beating as they are a lot smaller in the 6 spd. However many many people never have any probs and they beat on the car. Mine has had many autox and several track days. Yes i change the tranny fluid regularly and I never launch the car more than 4000 rpm which is what I have my standing rev limiter set to.
6 spd is very nice to have for long trips. Saves abit of gas. The 2005 6 spds have the best gear ratios IMHO Personally I have driven 05 RS and my car was just nicer to drive going thru the gears and on the back roads in North Georgia

I love the 6 speed that comes only in the MR editions. However, the 5 speed transmissions are stronger for the type of modifications you seem to want to make. Also, start with bolt ons. That way you will have all the supporting modifications for a larger turbo. Then go bigger turbo and internals. You will be surprised at how much power you will make from a full bolt on.
Either one is fine if its been taken car of and correct fluids used. Its more what you prefer to have with bolt-ons. If you frequent road courses get a 5 speed, the 6 can get hot and shear the teeth of the gears, esp. 4th). It costs less to have your 5 speed rebuilt than to buy a built 5 speed so if you have a fully built car either way you will probably end up with a built 5 speed anyways, but in the mean time get whatever you like more. It takes money either way to build an Evo, just more cost effective to rebuild a 5 speed than replace a 6 with a bult tranny.
I loved my 6 spd with a top speed of 183, The truth is the 6 spd breaks! Mine broke at 555 whp. It has crap to do with Fluids, if the 6 spd was worth a damn it if anything else would be stronger than the 5 but in reality it's weaker. I miss my 6 spd but my Shep 5 is butter! Go with the 5 they are more available!!
I road race quite often and the 6sp is terrible for my track. I'm always runnign out of revs in 4th. The 5sp guys never have this problem.
I've also done mounain/canyon runs and I'm shifting all over the place. It gets very tiring and annoying when the 5sp guys stick to 2nd and 3rd all the time.
If I were to buy another EVO, i'd get the 5sp.
EDIT: D420mac, come on man. What do you expect from 555whp?

Well what great feed back. thanks!!! I was really hooked on the 6speed. But the fact that i will be in the canyons alot, it seems the 5 speed would be the better choice. Im also sure when i hit the track, i will get hooked on that style of driving as well. What to do what to do.
