time for a new suspension
time for a new suspension
Hey all. I think I've got a damaged strut. My IX pulls right. I had the alignment checked. They can't fix it because there is no adjustment for camber. Mitsubishi said that it's probably a damaged strut. My friend did nail a pothole last summer with my car, so I guess that could be it eventhough to the naked eye, I can't see any damage. The autoshop guy said he could see a difference between the two struts up front, so that's probablyl the problem. So, Mitsubishi said a replacement OEM strut (Bilstein b/c I have an MR) would cost $670! So, instead of spending almost $700 for one shock, I'm going to get a whole new, height adjustable suspension. I think I want the Apexi EX-V Coilovers. does anyone have any experience with those? Also considering the Tein super streets, buddy cubs or hks hipermax. What coilovers do you guys like and why? Thanks a ton.
OK, so I've narrowed my choices down to four: 1. KW Variant 3, 2. Tein Mono Flex, 3. HKS Hipermax III Sports, or 4. HKS Hipermax RS. I've got the Evo IX MR that is a daily driver. HOwever, I'd like to take it to the track some time, so I want a track-worthy suspension that will also serve well for spirited daily driving. Anyone have any thoughts on the coilovers I'm looking at? These are the advantages I'm thinking of: KW's - best valving of the bunch, but not as easy to tune because you can't change the ride height of the KW's without affected the range of travel, Teins - hardest spring rate and rebuildable, but also expensive for what they are, HKS Hipermax Sports - probably the best bang for the buck and a good overall coilover with stiff set up, and HKS RS - nice for the street, and the cheapest by far, but maybe a little too soft. So, I'm having a really hard time deciding. Anyone have any experience with any of these who would give me some feedback??? Thanks.

those 3 are all good. i'd go with Hypermax 3's myself. i'm on buddy club racing spec coilovers, but i'm planning to switch to the Hypermax 3's.
as for your camber not being adjustable, camber IS adjustable on the stock suspension. they either don't know how to do it, or they are lying to you. there's an adjustable bolt for camber on the suspension.

i'd get the ones with the pillowball mounts. makes adjusting things a lot easier when it's time to have the car aligned. also, i don't know what you consider stiff, but my buddy clubs are 10k/10k and they don't bother me at all. i actually wish they were stiffer.
hey. well, just ordered the kw's. wish me luck. I still don't know if it was the right choice, but they seem super nice with the independent adjustment for dampening and rebound. I've heard they have the nicest valving of the ones I was considering. They're also supposed to be really nice on the street, but very trackable as well. The downside is the lack of mounts, but if the factory ones don't feel good, then I'll buy the ground-control mounts with caster/camber adjustment. Man, I hope I didn't just make a $2000 mistake.
