NEW member and tranny Q
Hey, just wanted to intro myself and ask a quick Q.
Im a recent graduate from Western Wash University with a degree in Plastics engineering( specialty composites) and vehicle engineering. Im also just finishing my 4th year on the Formula SAE team at our school, for those of you that dont know what that is visit ww.wwufsae.com. Basically we design build and race the cars we build. Ive been in charge of the carbon fiber chassis and all CFRP projects the last couple of years.
My second car out of highschool was a 95 awd talon and I have been hooked to the 4g63 platform since.
Im currently getting an old 90 eclipse gsx ready for some mild track fun and I am in the market for an EVO and figured I should become a part of the community and get educated before I make the big purchase.
I want to preface by saying I am new to this site but a member of DSMtuners and I did search this site for the info I am seeking but got little direct info.
SO, I am going to be seriously looking at purchasing an Evo, I have my heart set on a 9, but I would like a little guidance in making my purchase.
Ive read several buying guides but they are pretty generic for any car.
When deciding between an 8 and 9 what are the major benefits(acd, mivec etc)? I am mostly trying to decid between a 9MR or 9gsr. Ive heard the MR has a weak tranny(glass transmission) and that is important to me but I havent had any other Evo guys concur on this opinion.
The plan is to have the Evo as a reliable fun car that I can drive daily but also take to the track on the weekends for some HPDE and autoX days about one -two weekends out of the month. Power wise I'd be interested in at most 400 crank hp.
So please, informed opinions only and if this is the wrong location for this post could I be guided to the correct one?
THANKS!

Okay I will look around more, I have found some topics but none too specific to the tranny and Ive also read alot of opinions not stories from experience. Thanks Ill keep looking, ANYONE else???
There really is no say in this theres guys on here that dd there car with the 6 speed all day long with noi problems then again theres guys tryin to make big hp and the tranny just isnt holding it but then again me having the ix gsr my trans went out well 4th gear went out of it with only bolt ons its all on how u drive the car man. If u baby it the trans will hold up but if u beat on it i doubt it theres always gonna be a weak point somewhere.
thanks ohsix,
Thats kinda what Im finding, Ive just heard from an evo friend of mine that they(MR's) have the nick name of glass tranny. I plan to be nice to mine but Ide like the peice of mind knowing its stout just in case I miss shift or if I am to eventually put down 350whp.
anyone else?
