Transmission Warranty

I just took my EVO to the shop to get the transmission looked at. I noticed it grinding going into 4th gear. The shop said they will not cover the repairs if the car has an aftermarket clutch Has anyone else had this problem? I'm not sure if the car has an aftermarket clutch because I just bought it.
I'm not sure if they can legally do this?!?!

Yeah. Most after market clutches will beat on the transmission more and thus they have a somewhat valid claim to not warranty your transmission, if one is in there. This is pretty common, from what I've read.

Have you tried to change the fluids out? $60 + an afternoon for the possibility of a fix would be worth a try.

I just got off the phone with the stealership and they want to charge me $6000 to replace the trans. surprise surprise the aftermarket clutch voids the warranty. I'm not sure if they can legally do this but if so does anyone know of a good place to do a rebuild on a 6spd or know of a place where I can get a 5 spd. I live in southeastern Arizona and Don't really want to drive all the way to California

Again, they can do this because a stronger clutch will wear down a transmission faster since instead of the clutch taking the abuse and wearing down faster, the abuse is transferred to the transmission.

Try this place: http://www.sheptrans.com/transmissions/evo.htm

New upgraded transmission is $2750 (5 speed). Search forums to see if there's anything special that needs to be done to convert. The 5 speed is stronger than the 6. You'll probably need a new clutch as well. Install would probably be 600-$1K? Just guessing here. Still a lot better than $6K and a better transmission to boot.

did you already have them look at the car and take off the tranny and find the aftermarket clutch?

Yeah the dealership looked at the clutch and seen it was an ACT they said that they would have done it but the zone manager requested pictures of the clutch (apparently the evo has been through 2 trannys already ....................) I think I have everything planned for the swap. I talked to shep trans and collective racing (Tucson, Az) for the install. I'm getting the 5spd and the t-case rebuilt. Collective Racing is doing the install and it should come out to a total of around $5500. Much better than mitsu's quote of $6150 for the crappy 6spd. So I will be running a shep trans in about 2 weeks

Man that really really sucks you have to pay for that. If I had a $6K bill after flippen just buying a car, I'd say **** it and probably drink myself into a coma or something, lol. Hopefully it works out. Sorry this is your first experience with an Evo

yeah I'm kinda bummed out that I have to dump that much into it already but I think the car should be good to go. I had the dealership change all of the fluids and it actually feels worse than it did before they tore it apart. It's an expensive fix but I can't wait to see what it feels like with the shep trans. They start building it on Monday

I wonder if the same result would have happend at the dealership if it was stock.
there seems to always be a reason not to warranty it

Try changing fluid first. Its only $30-50 bucks. Mine had grind when i bought new. Changed fluid(alot of metal powders) grind was gone.
I used syncromesh. Oh dont use royalpurple. I changed to royalpurple and now im getting grind and hard to shift when its cold.

Yeah...

My 1-2 shift fork broke due to a crappy 2nd gear synchro...that I complained about to the dealership. Took in for service and even let the change the fluid. To which they said "it has some synchro material in the fluid, but not enough to warrant a claim." And now I can't drive my car lol. I'll be sure to bring it back into them and show them what's up.
