New V8 guy here and wanting an Evo!
I want one but it seems so much more expensive than keeping the Cobra right now.
I already pay $345 for the car payment, and $205 insurance.
I got all excited but its looking to cost an extra $150/month for the car, and $220/month more for the insurance.
$490 car, $425 insurance. Yikes!
**** that kinda kills the modding money. Maybe I'll just stick with the Cobra for now.

Shop around for insurance. Geico, my old company wanted 250 a month, I called Progressive and they did it for 90ish. I was shocked at the difference and made sure I gave them the right vin because it was such a huge difference. But I haven't had a ticket in 6 years tho....
03/04 guys swap out the heavier IRS to the solid which 96-98 has stock.
03/04 has returnless fuel system, sub par to return system stock on 96-98
03/04 has Iron 4 bolt main block compared to 96-98 6 bolt main aluminum Teksid block. which despite being aluminum is rated for 1600 horse stock. 100lbs lighter too.
03/04 weighs about 3600lbs roughly vs 3300 roughly for the 96-98.
96-98 has the most aerodynamic body
96-98 has no speed governor stock.
03/04 guys swap out their stock blower to make anything over 500rwhp.
Better to just throw a 6 speed in the 96-98, forged it, and boost it if you have high plans. If you just want 400rwhp then grab the 03/04.
As for insurance that was Progressive who is already cheaper than anyone else I've quoted.
Yeah, Id heard that too, never seen it broken down like that. I didn't know all that about the '96-'98, but I had heard that people who go nuts and want 800whp+ prefer the Mach1 over the Cobra because its engine is like the older Cobras, maybe the same that's in the '96-'98?

$490/Month, that seems like a lot for a used Evo. Are you planning on 4 year loan? or spending a bit on IX? I have calculated it should cost me around 400-450 /month for 5 years on IX.
Insurance varies by age, driving record, city you live and credit history. The insurance quote for an Evo for me is a little less than $100/month. I can't imagine paying $425/month for insurance!

Teksid which is a company in Italy does F1 quality castings for Ferrari, Lambo, Audi, Porsche, and tons of private race teams. Ford swapped to their own casting called the WAP block after 99 and a few Teksids laying around went into the 01 Cobra but not many. They swapped only because the Teksids were so good they couldnt afford them.
Teksid blocks are good to 1600 horse with forged internals and they have been pushed way higher. WAP blocks are rated at 600 horse and cant quite do as well since the tolerances are not nearly as good.
96-98 Cobra is still better than the Mach if going all out. Mach has better heads for running without a blower, but the worse block, and less agressive cams. They also have the 3650 Trans vs the 96-98 Cobras T-45. Both have an 8.8 solid rear. Mach has newer interior and retro gauges while the cobra has a better block, oversized blower heads just itching for boost, and clearer black on white gauges. Mach uses returnless fuel system which is subpar to the 96-98's return style.
Yeah I know this isnt a mustang board. But hey at least I know something about cars
Just not evos.... yet.
Just go test drive one and see if you like it! For practicality (4 doors and AWD) it makes a great daily driver, much better than a 2 door/RWD platform. The tuning potential is incredible, and the beauty of it is you can slowly add parts with a re-tune here and there as you see fit. The thing I find funny is how big V8/muscle car lovers hate on "rice" and get such a bruised ego when a 4 banger blows them away! I'm glad you have come to realize that! Also, the Evo, unlike Honda Civics (and all other associations of "rice") is actually a production version of a true rally race car... which really puts it in a whole different class of vehicle than your typical Japanese 4-banger... the 2.0 4 cylinder motor comes form meeting rally-specifications for competition purposes, where they are not allowed to use a larger motor... thats why in Japan the Subaru WRX STi is a 2.0 and not a 2.5L... as for the wing, its personal preference, and looks a lot better in person, and many owners do prefer the wingless look. My father hated on it until he saw the car in person and then admitted he thought it looked pretty nice. I can honestly say it made my car feel super stable, as if going 75 mph, when I was cruising along at 168mph for a few minutes, not on a public road of course
but again, its purpose is to serve as down force, just like the fins on top of the MR which help direct air to the wing. There is HUGE aftermarket support as well. With really good driving people run high 12's on stock Evos, and for not much money you can add a large amount of power. I like that somebody said if you can't beat them join them... because I would rather be the guy in the 4-banger stomping the guys with the big v8s (btw I do! LOL). On the track too... passing M3s, Vettes, Audi R8, Porsches, supercharged Mustangs, etc. is a GREAT feeling
I have slowly built mine up to where I have most bolt-on stock replacement parts (intercooler and piping, cams, full exhaust, ported stock intake/exhaust mani ans throttle body) plus a re-worked OEM Evo IX turbo (the CBRD BBK turbo) which appears stock externally and spools just as fast, plus methanol kit and a tune, and I make 385whp on a low-reading mustang dyno (reads 20-25% lower than cran hp, so 460-485 crank hp) and thats at 4200+ ft. elevation here in SLC... its $hit your pants fast and spools like stock with full power way before 4000 rpm all the way to 8K if I feel like taking it up that high. Just go drive one and that will be all the convincing you need!

I really got bummed about the insurance issue. Dammit I wanted an Evo but I cant find a place that wont screw me.
Right now I'm better off waiting until I can find a cheaper insurance company. When I got off the phone with my company, I joked and told the woman "I'll go right back to roaring around in my cheaper V8 then, hope I can keep it on the road"
I cant believe a 4cyl car only a few years newer is *double*. They really dont want me to have that car.
