at what point is exhaust necessary?

I'll admit this right now. I'm a sissy. i had turbo back exhaust on my last evo 8 and am loving the stealth stock exhaust on my 9.

i've got the mbc and walbro.
in the process of ordering intake, licp, cams (midrange powerband), and getting a tune.

haha how far can i push the stock exhaust?

and yes, i'll eventually succumb to the monumental power loss involved with keeping my car quiet and get a turbo back again.

You're already way down on power by not having exhaust. At least get a testpipe and a Works modified stock muffler.

Yea as long as you can take it basically, you are restricting the hell out of it.

Get a real exhaust asap.

i dont think you understand... when i floor it all i can hear is the turbo. haha it's so tight.

and a test pipe and "real exhaust asap" are exactly the opposite of what im shooting for.

i just want to know how long i can rock the stocker before she quits on me or im forced to cheat on her.

Like I said, as long as you can handle it.

You can do whatever you want to the car, and still run the stock exhaust. Just know that you are already limiting it. You could be making 500+whp on stock exhaust, she's probably not going to quit on you. The more power you are making, the more you are restricting with the stock exhaust.

At what point you are forced to cheat on her is entirely up to you. What would you consider a good reason to swap to a real TBE? If you're thinking the stock exhaust is going to break and make you upgrade, that's probably not going to happen. I would upgrade it ASAP if you want the power you are holding back.

im going to go ahead and say you NEED an exhaust now! you have too much back pressure going to the turbo... especially if your running too much boost!!

i just installed an exhaust on a customers evo the other day and am real impressed with how quite it is, close to stock but without the restrictiveness... he is the same way, doesnt want noise... and the flow and feel and overall sound is awesome.... so i would recommend that to you

he went with a megan downpipe, perrin hi flow cat, and tannabe cat back!! its quite but it flows!!!!

as a reference point the stock exhaust has traditionally limited boost to around the 1.4bar range (stock) for me. with a 3" turboback, i am able to peak/hold at 1.6-1.7bar. Also, turbo lag is much more noticeable with the stock exhaust, delaying spool-up and restricting throughput. I would say the stock exhaust is essentially robbing of you between 30-60whp for a car w/ SRI, TBE, MBC.

With that said, there are a fair amount of rally cars that run inlet restrictors and do fairly competitive with 2" pipes... but they run anti-lag to compensate...

You would be significantly limiting your cams (are you going with 272/272?) with your exhaust set-up...

Have you ever considered a 3" downpipe to a cutout?, and then stock exhaust cat-back... may be the best way to solve your sound considerations, but allowing you to really open her up when you need to...
