Didn't they make an older Mirage that had a turbo in it? It was FWD, though. I agree with everyone else - don't chop the nuts off the Evo by de-tuning it. You'll also be putting mileage on a car while not getting to really experience it. Who knows what you'll want in 4 years time.

FWIW - I have the AEM tru-boost which you can set to WG pressure for valet/wife mode.

I personally would highly suggest getting a Honda Civic with VTEC of some sort. Since it's a Honda, you won't find many problems with the motor quality but rather, driver/owner problems. I wouldn't suggest buying a swapped as you might run into problems. Sure, they might be faster but who knows what the previous owner did during the swap and if he did it right. I remember my cousin took his motor out and found out one of his mounts wasn't on all the way tight to the chassis.

Now, for the licence thing. Since you'll be a newbie to driving, I HIGHLY suggest not grabbing an Evo. These cars are fast and you could end up dead within the first week. I remember a story last month that someone went 100mph in his mom's Camery V6 then the tires popped and flipped the car a couple times. No one in the car was wearing seat belts so they were thrown out of the car. He also just got his licence the day before the accident. No one survived the crash. Please PLEASE don't be those high school kids that absolutely love to reckless drive all over the street. I've seen way too many that cut off ppl and road rage and it just makes me angry when I find out they are only 16 years old.
right on bro

I would also suggest just getting an AWD non turbo car like the Impreza RS. I'm sure an officer or 2 will know what an EVO is when it drives by them, detuned or not, and if they see a younger person in it you could be toast. I know 4 years is a long time, but just wait it out and make sure you have a great driving record, and just get an EVO later.

Yea no point in having an evo without all the fun of a large, high boosting turbo.

Get a lancer.

I already have a car for my P's. A dirty old holden commodore, this might even just turn into a project over the probationary period. Might be the way for me to go. Can kill myself the moment I get off my P's to improve the statistics we have here! Trust me when I know I cannot drive well and I have had the whole tree wrapping lecture several times, have actually been in one of them (I was a passenger) at 100k so I know what happens. I don't want one of these to go fast on the street, to flog or hoon around like everyone else does in the town. Project + Track car. Winding the boost down was just to get it there and back so it was semi-legal I know what a Evo with no turbo equals. We used to have one.

The way it works is simple, you can drive it around. If you get pulled over and they realise what you have under the hood. There goes your license, they dont have any list but the cops aren't dumb they know there cars which is why I know they would spot an Evo with P plates. A couple years ago we never had this worry we had the old power to weight ratio law, the majority ruin these things though..

In terms of money, it does not bother me in the slightest I am a nearly qualified chef on a good wage and I'm still at home so I am saving alot of what I earn. By the time I am 18 I will have 25-30k saved. I can pay a 10,000 loan off in a year or two that doesnt bother me.

OK, so if a cop knows what an Evo is why do you think he won't pull you over anyway or he'll believe you've "detuned" it? It just sounds like a bad idea. Be patient and obey the law.

Buy a basic car (RWD if I get to choose), learn to improve your driving skills (accelerating, braking, turning, etc). When you get an Evo in the next 4 years, it will be cheaper and racing and driving would be a breeze since you polished your skills with a non- hi-tech, not AWD car.

Yea! no fast and the furious crap, it will get you killed. A kid owned an evo and he always watched fast and the furious movie and he though he knows everything about cars already. We went to a car meet saw the kid pulled out of the parking lot wide open throttle, lost control, almost caused a lot of traffic accident, and straight to a light post. $16,000 worth to fix. Evos are fun and IT WILL TEMPT YOU TO DO STUPID THINGS ONCE IN A WHILE (i'm guilty). you dont want to be the one to explain your parents how you end up crashing an expensive car right?

It's called "keep your foot out of it". If you don't think you can control yourself, just sell the car and find another hobby.

It's called "the law" in his country. It sounds like they actually have some type of legislation aimed at preventing new drivers from owning anything too powerful regardless of his skill level.

Which is kind of good because let's face it how many teenage boys are mature enough to say "I'm not ready for that kind of power". If they were mature enough to think that they probably wouldn't need to worry about it.

Hah! So True...

But I'd like to say I was mature enough. I had 3 4-cyl cars before I was 22... 1 was totaled in an accident (not my fault), and the other two were sold.

I finally got the evo when I was 22/23... When I my child was born, and I "Need a 4 door car I could haul the kid with, and enjoy." Now the wife likes the car almost as much as I.

Exactly. Heck my first car my parents let me drive was a 78 Chevy Pickup, then a 86 Dodge Pickup. That was in the 96-98.
