Buying evo, have questions
Buying evo, have questions
Well,
I'm sick of my lancer.... Trans is starting to slip and things are beginning to die in it. Been saving for an evo for quite awhile now, and will be starting to look around soon. But before I do, I have some questions.
The most I can afford is 21k, so I assume I'll be looking for a IX or an 05 VIII.
Now, whats the good and bad to look for when I'm shopping around to help give me an understanding of when to turn away and when to ask more questions? And which model should I be interested in? So far, the MR has caught my eye. The car will be used as my daily driver car for work/school/fun/back and forth from st. Louis to detroit. Will also have to finance
I really like the leather interior also. Any other info you can add about buying would be great, thanks.
I've been a team member on ar15.com for quite awhile, so I know how it is when people ask these kind of questions ("which is the best" "most reliable" kind of threads) OVER and over, so if this has been answered 235234534 times, I apologize.

IMO stay away form the MR just because of the transmission. They break so easy, alot will say they dont but my past expeiriences there garbage. Get a 5 speed.
As far as what to look for, just feel the clutch, check all the syncros as you go threw the gears, listen for knocking, ticking, etc coming from the motor, whineing from the transfer case.
and do a compresion test before you buy.
IMO get someone who knows about an evo to come with you.

the mr tranny is a much smoother/daily-driver friendly tranny and has more stout lower gears (1,2,3)
various members have drag raced/auto-x'ed their six speeds to the death with no issues

ignore this...unless you road race and use the higher gears (4,5,6) or make upwards of 450 wtq there is nothing to worry about

I'm REALLY getting sick of the automatic trans in my lancer right now.
We'll see. The anticipation of getting this car is honestly killing me. And this website doesn't help much either
I don't know anyone who owns an evo around here, or knows much about these types of cars. I've been a team member on ar15.com for awhile and made some good friends, so I'm hoping some of the gear heads there might help me out when it comes to checking one out.
I've heard from a few people on arfcom about trans problems on the MR, but personally the MR appeals to me more. And although I will probably put this car through alot of dirt, I doubt i'll come close to what some people put their evos through. I don't think I'll be able to be as picky though, so whatever I can find at the best price, that has been maintained the best is what I will probably shoot for.
The lower the price, the best. But I think I will have to stay away from private sales, as I will be financing the car. I tried the whole bank loan, A) their payments suck and B) they like to take their time. When I'm 100% ready to slap down the cash, I'm willing to travel in order to find one that suits me best.

I have an 06 MR and love it. I drag race that BI*CH every chance I get!!! For DD, I think it is your best bet. If you have plans to mod and go over 450 WTQ & WHP, I would get an 06 RS. Get the 06 because it is an Evo IX and it has the MIVEC head.

i love my 9 mr.... it has the smoothest shifting i've ever felt, perhaps even smoother then a civic. it just butters its way into gear, and honestly, i bought my car 2 months ago and was looking into the same thing, and people here have been telling me about hte 6 speed.
but i ignored, and bought the mr. i do NOT regret it at all, and that extra gear is good on the freeway =)
