Tune needed?

I've been lurking EvoM for a while to learn about these cars before making a purchase. I looked at one yesterday and have a question. It's an 06 MR SE with the following mods:

- Injen intake (with hard pipe, I believe)
- Injen LICP & UICP
- HKS BOV
- Megan Racing downpipe
- HKS Cat-back

BUT it hasn't been tuned. From what I've read on here, it seems like it should get tuned or it could be running lean. The BOV is VTA so I believe that would cause temporary lean conditions. Is that right? Or should it be fine as is?

The seller is being really fishy so I'm trying to figure out why. He wouldn't meet me halfway because "he didn't want to put too many miles on it" and says he's selling because he has a long commute to community college so he got a Honda. These aren't gas guzzlers, so he just seems to be avoiding driving it for some reason.

TIA for any help.

yes, it should be tuned. I think a lot of people on here will tell you to avoid it and keep looking for another Evo (especially if the seller seems fishy to you).

Those mods are fine without a tune except for the HKS bov which is crap for most evos even when it's in recirc. mode. Intakes require tunes to run better and to make power but you can drive it hard without one especially with the Injen one.

avoid this evo and keep looking if they are faking out and not taking calls dont want to drive it etc then there is something majorly wrong with it then again he could be right he may think your not serious and not want to put any extra miles on it for you to say ill think about it if your serious go up there and check it out.

I would only buy a modded Evo from a knowledgeable seller. If the guy doesn't want to take the time to talk to you about the car then there is probably something wrong with it.

You may not have to get tuned it depneds on the ECU conditions.....your just not making optimized power that's advertised with the mods.... The HKS SSQV is crap for the evo put the stock diverter valve back on. You should be able to order a mail in flash from Mellon before wanting more mods.

i dont think thats too fishy i would say the same thing, miles make a big difference when your trying to sell the car he just really wants to keep them down or under a point. i hate to add miles to my evo and im not even selling it.
gas mialage is no where near a honda where you can put reg gas in and still have dubble the milage even my teg with every bolt-on you can get gets better gas milage than my stock evo.
also the vta might create stalling problems when at idol unless they have a diferent gm or something MAF so he might think his car is haveing problems when all you need to do is put the stock bov back on. i would say go for it if its a realy good price, but always go for the stock evo if you can.

I had evo IX MR with almost same mods before. I had driven for several months. but, I had no issue about running lean or something. only thing I could not avoid was CEL. It really depends on what you mod. I recommand getting a tune if you want to remove CEL and gain more power.

Thanks for all the replies.

I sense something is wrong with the car, just can't pinpoint what it is. So I'm going to pass on this one and look for something I have no qualms about.

When selling a car, the owner usually wants to keep the mileage under a certain point.
He might be avoiding driving a long distance coz an oil change might be due soon as well.
As adammartini said the evo isn't a cheap commuter car. Commuting, & maintenance, costs of an evo are not for everyone, it could be he just can't afford it any longer.
To get the maximum out of the mods it should be tuned but it can do without one, with the exception of the BOV (car needs to tuned with BOV to run correctly).

If the price is right for you, check the car out & ask him everything you'd like to know. Then take it from there.
