EVO Owner prospect with a few questions

Whats up everyone. I've been on this site for awhile now and contemplated getting an EVO for a few years now but always end up with other cars and being disappointed. My roommate, also good friend for years, has an EVO 8 making around 430 hp and I've been driving this past week and have grown to love EVERY aspect of the car.

Anyways, back to the point, I'm looking at getting a 9 MR GG. The reason I want the MR is b/c of the 6spds. Now my question is, for you MR owners, at 70 or 80mph, what rpm are you at? I hate how the 5spd sits at 3k going down the high way. I've found a sexy *** SE but again, don't really care for the 5spd. I HEARD that the 6spd is weaker than the 5spd. That's fine. I'm not going to be dragging the hell out of it. Maybe a track day or two.

Also, the MR doesn't come with a sunroof correct?

I appreciate all help fellas/ladies. Hopefully I will be full joining this site in the near future.

At about 70mph, VIII 5 speed is a little over 3K RPM. The IX 5 speed will be about 150 RPM more, the MR 6 speed about 150 rpm less.

If you going to be doing a track day, I wouldn't get a 6 speed for any long term high speed event, they know ruin 4th gear due to overheating.

You couldn't get a sunroof with the Aluminum roofs on the RS, SE and MR's.

Ok, thanks guys. I found a nice SE for sale, so I might get that if he comes down on the price a tad.

Do all MR's and SE's come with the foglights? Or is it an option?

You can't go wrong either way, but I would advise you to just get the IX SE, especially if you find a good deal on one, which sounds like it might be the case. The MR is definitely sitting at a lower rpm at highway speeds, and while every little bit helps, it's not anything significant that makes it that much more livable, plus it's even rated as getting slightly lower fuel economy anyway, which to me negates having a sixth gear, especially since I'm not doing any top speed runs. I've owned two Evos (a IX and currently a IX SE) and do mostly freeway driving at 70-80 mph, putting the rpms anywhere between 3200-3800 rpm. It seems high, but it never really bothered me... and the car I had prior to my first Evo was a 1999 Mercedes E320. And despite the higher rpms, I've broken into the 27 mpg (tank average) range before, and achieved 26+ more than a few times. So unless you find a IX MR at a better price than an otherwise identical IX that you are considering, I would vote against it, ESPECIALLY if it's an SE.

The rpms always bothered me b/c I'm used to V10's at 1900-2200 rpm at 80-90mph. So 3k is a lot to me. I VERY much appreciate your input! I guess the SE is what I will get.

Don't let anyone talk you out of getting the MR.The six speed trans is just fine.If you know how to drive properly and don't abuse the car the trans will hold up no problem.

But let's be realistic though--it's an awesome car, but it certainly has some shortcomings.

I'm glad I could help. What were you "used to" with V-10s? And was this your car? Anyway, 3k rpm might seem like a lot, but that's to be expected in this arena of small displacement (I'd say 2.0 liters or less) turbocharged four-cylinders, which is even more of a change when coming from engines with larger displacement and more cylinders.

But that changes if you're making big power or doing a lot of track time at high speeds, especially if you combine the two. But to a lot of people, it's not worth the extra money, all factors equal... though that is why I stated that unless he found a killer deal on an MR, his money would be better spent on an SE or something.

I don't get why anyone would choose a weaker tranny over a stronger one. No matter how you drive, its good to have piece of mind especially with such an important part!

^ Especially when there is a significant price difference between them but more or less identical performance

There isn't a significant price difference in used VIII and IX MR's
