Question Is a modified Evo worth buying?

I'm looking to buy a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, I have heard that they are "picky" with mods and not being tuned. I have seen a few local Evolutions that are modified, some have full engine re-builds and others just have and exhaust system. I know stock would be best to buy for reliability sake, but I would just end up putting some light mods on and having it tuned. So my main question is, is a modified Evo worth buying?

For piece of mind, I wouldn't touch an Evo if the entire engine is built. Closer to stock the better. Exhaust, intake and so forth isn't anything to fret about.

The more mods the better! It will save you a lot of $$$ in the long run. If the motor has been rebuilt, find out by who? And what the specs of the build were. Your best bet is a 2006 RS if you can find one.

If it hasn't been beaten to death and abused then it can be a good way to get the mods you would put on your car anyways. So look over the car and make sure its not on its last leg. your choice.

I would try to find one bone stock, even though I know thats pretty much impossible to find now a day. To me theres no joy more than building my evo to my specs, and watching it grow into what I invision. Just my .02

It completely depends on how well it was modded and tuned. If it is modded, figure out exactly what parts it has, who performed the install, if it is tuned, and who performed the tune. If you don't know what you're looking at or looking for then I would say skip the modded ones and buy a nice virgin stock one so you can learn as you go.

Ok, Thanks! I think if I try to find one lightly tuned that will be fit, but I will still consider the more modified ones if they owners can produce receipts. Thanks again everyone! Please feel free to keep the opinions coming, the more the merrier!

Perfect. Light mods are the best unless it's a shop car and was only used for shows, blah blah blah. Other than that expect a heavily modified car to have been uuuuused and abuuuused :P The smaller mods will save you money in the end, as well

i think doing the mods is the best part about owning this car, so i looked for a car as close to stock as possible

only problem is once you start you cant stop

Honestly, think about it, buying an EVO 8 or 9 means you are buying the 8th or 9th version of the car. Therefore, just about anything problem you can think about is resolved. Obviously, closer the stock, the less beat on, but you are getting one of the best all around cars for a great price.

If you buy a modified EVO, look to get it tuned to where you want it to be. There are dozens of 1,000awhp EVOs as well as daily driven 500+awhp EVOs. If you know what you are looking for in an EVO and what mods are best for each model you cannot go wrong with an EVO.

I hope you have a great experience in your search and you find something both ultimately reliable and modded.
