Glenn, the GSC S2 cams are top of the tops for Evos IMHO. Head and shoulders better than HKS's. You should run springs and retainers with these though. You will be amazed by the diff. over the HKS's.

true that and the mivec motors respond better to mods. I would just get a 9 and swap for an 8 bumper which would be cake since everyone wants the 9 front.

as an answer i'll just tell you my story. I love the Evo IX MR, I love the MR edition, the 6 speed, and i love the IX. I think the money is worth it. if you dont like the front end you can always put a different bumper on it. I've spent all my money on it tho, i wanted the best an evo has to offer, and i got it, but because of that, i cost myself the opportunity to modify it, which i really want, and I'm kind of starting to wish i just bought an 03 VIII and spent the extra 6k difference on mods, and i would've had a hella nice evo. So i guess it all depends on how much money you have and willing to spend on it. If i had more, i would've got the IX MR and modded it, but sometimes you gotta choose between one or the other

Hey dude I love your DSM; it's incredibly clean. Man... it makes me miss my 95 GST for sure. I had a MUTT turbo on it I remember Anyway, definately go for the 9 and if you get a 6-speed dont worry about it. Mine holds out great and shifts night and day smoother over the 5-speed (I had an 03 Evo so I can compare). Anyway search like others said, theres years worth of info here.

5 speed is 100% stronger then the 6 speed this goes for all years on the evo's so if you plan on any kind of racing 5speed is the way to go. Hence why you see Mr guys converting to 5-speed and not the other way around. I would def save the money and go with a evo 8 once you throw some cams on there mivec loses it's edge on you.

i've heard of 5 speed guys switching to 6 speed, or building MR replicas, but I've never heard of MR people swapping for a 5 speed. Why would they even buy an MR then? that defeats nearly the entire purpose of even having an MR

i know you really like the hks cams, but I would definitely recommend going with a more aggressive one. the problem with HKS is that back in the 90's, all of their products were the top of the line, best out there. however, there hasn't been much more innovation in their technology since then, which is unfortunately why we haven't seen better products. You can't really go wrong with gsc, kelford, or fp. they are essentially the same cam with minor differences in duration and lift but all guaranteed to yield more power than hks's cams. good luck

Oh really? Are those people the ones that run something like an exedy twin hd on a stock turbo too? Thats why they break their transmissions. I'm pushing over 400wtq through the 6 speed with the FACTORY clutch for quite a while now and haven't had any issues whatsoever. I'm betting most of these "failures" are from lack of skill.

Do you have any personal experience with the 6 speed falling apart or breaking? Or is this all just hearsay that you read on the interwebs and like to play telephone?

Just wanna say I love my IX MR...just some mild mods, tbe and o2 housing, tephra v7 rom running 22.5 psi direct boost control, mivec map self tuned...To me, mivec makes a lot of difference in the midrange, and helps spool up a lot too. I think I've spent a total of maybe $500 thus far....mods don't have to be expensive to have fun.
