Evo X vs c5 z06 + beater

Hi guys,
As a quick background, I bought a house and I had a great opportunity to get a family used suv (ford explorer sport 4x4) for really cheap so I decided to sell my STi. 6 months of driving the "exploder" and now I'm unbelievably bored. Not to mention the thing has 110k miles on it and who knows how long it will last. I'm a car guy and once you have driven amazing performance cars, you can't go back to driving "normal" cars.

Evo X: I've wanted one since it came out. I have driven awd turbo cars exclusively (stealth twin turbo, sti) except for the 2.5 yrs where I owned a slow turd infiniti g35 coupe. It was pretty and girls dug it but it was sooo slow and terrible in snow even with expensive snow tires! But back to the evo...it's a fun car that I could daily drive here in upstate NY, where it snows half the year.

Pros
-AWD
-1 nice car all year long

Cons
-no luxury
-econobox roots
-feels like "been there done that" with awd turbo cars

c5 z06: Amazing performance and now they are so cheap! You can get a pretty decent one for $20k these days. These things rip and it would take a highly modified evo to keep up with one. Add a few mods (head/cam/intake/exhaust) and watch out! However, the weather here sucks most of the year. How often could I really drive it? I'd also have to keep the exploder and hope it doesn't...well...explode.

Pros
-fast as crap in mostly stock form
-something different than what i'm used to

Cons
-can't drive it every day
-sits in the garage half the year if not more
-old body style and mid life crisis stigma

Please help me figure this out! Other cars I have considered include BMW 335 (i or xi), 135i, Newer WRX.

Anyone owned both a Evo X and Z06 and can put in their 2 cents? Also, keep in mind this is C5 Z06. I don't want to hear any "buy a C6 z06 because it's faster derp!" I can't afford one, my budget is around $25k for a car. Thanks!

What's your budget going to be to mod?

The C5 is going to be nice, VERY nice in comparison to the X... until you put some money in to the X to make it, ya know, not suck horribly bad.

No mod budget. I will save up for mods along the way. I have a house to take care of now so no disposable income like I've had in the past. That all went towards the downpayment. For a daily driver I couldn't get too crazy with mods anyhow regardless

I'm gonna suggest under the understanding that you have strict budget limits and you want to be disciplined in sticking to them whether you can afford more or not.

The Evo X is definitely what will suit your need/bill. I've lived in Chicago, pittsburgh, King of Prussia, VA and Cherry Hill NJ. All of them see varied amounts of snow. The evo will definitely be a better all weather performance car. It'll also make it cheaper on the insurance compared to your second option of keeping 2 vehicles. Seems like you already know a lot about Turbo AWD cars, so you already know what the mod list and budget for that will be. You'll be dealing with a known quantity and hence, better peace of mind. good luck with whatever you decide. Those are hard choices for sure.

Mods - please move back to Evo X General section. This is simply a comparison between 2 cars. I am far from a newbie, have been a member since 2007, and have driven awd turbo cars since 1999. I require no information about the Evo, just looking for opinions on what car people who have tried both would recommend

My friend just told me to get a Evo 8 or 9 and some mods to make it as fast as a z06 as well, but I just don't like the way those look. Way too econobox for my tastes. No offense to anyone that has one. I had a STi for the last 2 yrs that had maybe only a slightly better interior so I'm not one to knock it.

Anyone ever own both these cars (evo x and z06)? I guess I'm looking for some input saying "I had (have) such and such car and this one is so much better in every way!"

you must not have ever been in a vette. seats are junk and no room. interior makes the evo x look like a bentley in comparison.

This thread made my laugh, exact same situation I'm in.
Except I own an 04 C5 Z06 and have never driven an X

Incidentally this is my first post too, been lurking since 08. I've been a Mitsu fan for a long time and thought I'd buy a IX or an X but it didn't happen, the Z06 was just too badass to resist.

I'd love to keep my Z, virgin car and an absolute blast to drive.
But the reality of the situation is that if I move back to the right coast in the upcoming months I'll have sell her and maybe look into a X. Still reading and researching though, good luck on your decision.

I have owned two C5 Z06's. I did cam, long tube, intake, and exhaust on both. Very fun car and very fast. But I live in CA. I would rather be able to drive a car 365 days a year then get a car I can only drive 6 months out of the year. However if you have no money to Mod the X then go with the Z06. My last 02 Z06 did 12.2's bone stock and got 28 MPG on the high way. The X is a great platform but takes a lot of money just to put it at the same level of performance of the Z06. If you have money for mods get the X. If no money for mod's get the Z06. OH and as far as looks I still think the C5 Z06 is a good looking car that ages well. I like the looks of the Z06 a lot more than the X. Every time I see a clean Z06 heading down the road I cant help but stare.

Plus, I'd like to get back into weekend racing during the summer. Some of my friends go and I feel left out (road course, 1/4 mile, 1/8 mile, autox).

This sounds pretty similar to my situation except I'mm about to list my evo for sale. I wonder how bad I'll regret it 6 months down the road lol

Awesome info. Was waiting for some feedback such as this. Even if I were to get a Evo X I would have to keep it pretty close to stock regardless if it's going to be my one and only car. I can do bolt ons and tune but will stick with stock turbo most likely. Does that change things? Also, how do the cars compare for overall fun factor? Will the 6 months of driving the Z make up for the 6 months I'm driving an old turd Explorer?

Have you test driven a Z06 yet? That may help you a lot with your choice as what I like may not translate. If it was me it would be very hard to choose a stock turboed EVO over a Z06. Now if you where upgrading the turbo I would probably go EVO just to have a newer car. But once you do that the EVO gets pretty pricy real quick. As far as fun factor, the handling is great in both. AWD is a blast but so is a very light and balanced RWD platform. I would say they are both great on the handling. My EVO with intake, test pipe, cat back, E85 and tune still felt slow compared to my stock Z even though the EVO may have been close in the 1/4. But then your back to only getting to drive 6 months out of the year. I would highly suggest test driving both. Another thing to consider is the EVO has a crappy clutch, weak transfer case pins, and strang gearing. The Z is stout right out of the box. I think you have a tough choice.

Pretty much impossible to test drive one. The closest one for sale is 200 miles away and even then, most of the time they won't let you test drive them. I've driven an evo x gsr and mr but u should have seen the hoops I had to jump through in order for them to let me. I was turned away at one mitsu dealership and this was 20 min after test driving much more expensive bmw's down the street. Also, like I said, I just bought a house and my car budget is 25k. Bolt ons vs bolt ons, it sounds like the z06 is the much better car eh? How about a modded up c5 coupe? I've seen a lot for pretty cheap that make more power than a z06. Is the handling going to be that bad in comparison? I will be tracking whatever car I get a couple times each summer
