Um, yeah. Should take less than an hour with an adjustable wrench and duct tape.

For a daily driver I would go for an sti, they're a little more civil than the Evo, and the interior is nicer, and the tranny is stronger. You'll likely have an easier time finding an Sti that isn't beat to hell. Sti's and all of Subaru's horizontal motors are notorious for oil problems, blown head gaskets, cam seal leakage, to name a few. I'm a mechanic and most of the subaru's that come in are due to oil problems.

Don't expect to make as much power on the stock block and internals, and for as cheap as you could on an Evo..It's like $50 per hp on an Sti. You can either have a bulletproof tranny and ok engine internals, or a bulletproof block and an ok tranny.

I do like the noise those cars make tho..

Not on these new cars the transmission controls tend to be directly linked to the ecu making it more difficult.

I'm still truely baffled by these kinds of threads though. People should simply drvie what they want regardless of someone's opinion. If you were looking for real information like which could be more easily modded or whatnot thats fine but the questions of what they should own is kind of disturbing.

Do people just lack a sense of self purpose these days?

you ever think maybe its because they want a sti but they want to know what comes along with the whole package not just the good stuff. So best place to ask is a forum. I rather have other peoples opinions on how there evo has treated them then to make a 35k choice only to not be happy and wish i knew the MR tranny sux etc. maybe the raillart would better suit my needs with less trouble the dealer is trying to sell you a car point blank somebody that owns it can give you a good opinion after the fact

you can change a auto to manual, but it is A LOT of work.. new master cylinder slave cylinder, pedal assembly... along with the shifter and cables and the different mounts ect ect!!

its is a lot more work then you want to deal with

Perhaps but clearly most people don't voice it in that manner agreed?

I don't think a forum is really a good place to get an idea of how well a car is going to treat you. If anything I'd be looking for user reviews on edmunds and consumer reports to get an idea of what tends to break on any vehicle i purchase. Then if I was truly in love with the cars comfort and styling I'd probably look for what it would take to maintain such a car and if I was going to mod it what sort of support is out there.

HINTS THE FORUM BUDDY!! You can read reviews on edumunds etc but when it comes to modding and cost of just maintaining or how often it tends to break a forum is a great place to ask. you have people had have had the evo for 2years + they can give you a better assessment then edumunds one time review any day of the week. so i dont think his question is as invaild as you want to make it appear

I think you completely misunderstood the intent of my initial question now that we are on this tangent

I was questioning the general nature of why people seem to need others to validate their motives to purchase something like a vehicle.

I don't dispute the forum will provide the most accurate information however you are looking at it as an evo owner who's probably been looking at the cars for a lifetime right?

I use the edmunds reviews as starting points for research on the vehicle. If they said the transmissions weaker I'd like to find out why and start looking elsewhere. I'd probably end up here if it was an evo.

I do btw appreciate this rather enjoyable banter on a rather slow day for me

I've driven both and am buying an Evo.

For me the STI was not special enough. It sounded restrained and was not theatrical enough. It accelerated but not fast enough. I looked down at the speedo to see I was only doing 100kph or 62mph when I was expecting 120.

The EVO was the reverse in auto mode, left a roundabout after doing 360degrees floored it looked down and I was doing 120 when I was expecting 100. I put my deposit down the next day.

Everyone's different Jav took my sister the better part of a month to learn to drive a stick.

Personally I would try practicing on something a little more forgiving than an evo if you want to try a manual car .

The SST transmission is nice but it wont hold the same amount of power as a normal transmission just FYI.
